Entertainment Unit Pics
Hello all,
At the risk of sounding like a kiss *ss I'd firstly like to thank the regulars on this forum for taking the time to answer so many questions over the years and for building an invaluable knowledge base for people to use.
After getting so much good information from this forum I thought I'd better show my first big wood working project.
I learnt alot along the way. My eldest son learnt a few new words also.
Also managed to justify the purchase of some new power tools.
The unit is not finnished off yet, it needs a good clean and I still have to fit some handles, straighten up the doors etc and polish up the top some more- still havent got the shellac application perfected yet.
It's made entirely from jarrah.
cheers
Ben

First, welcome aboard. I just love jarra. The unit is coming along fine and the design has clean simple lines. I like it.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

I agree, a new tv would set off your unit very nicely
Your hard work on the little projects has definitely paid off. What are you going to do next

Bendog,
You’ve done a great job. I really like the unit and love the wood.
I am currently building an entertainment unit too. Hopefully it will look as good as yours.

Oooh very nice!!
I am currently thinking about using Jarrah for my first big project - also an entertainment unit . Thinking of using 12mm ply for the drawers with 9mm bases.
Can you tell me the width, depth and height of the drawers?

G'day Wendy,
Next on the request list is a buffet/wine rack. I have heaps of off cuts and a nice slab of the tree left over. I have to build some sort of milling jig to flatten it out with the router (chainsaw aint the most accurate tool in the shed and me thicknesser will only take 450mm width)
not sure of the design yet.
cheers

A buffet/ wine rack -Righto, how about a WIP thread then Ben
Keep the scraps of jarrah, you'd be surprised as to how useful they can be for , yup, more small projects
A milling jig with a router, I think it was one of BobL's posts that had something that might interest you.
cheers

Draw faces are 890wide x 240 high
Drawers are 840 x 600 x 160 deep. Nice and big for all the cd's and stuff.
I did the dove tails first (after ALOT of practice on cheap pine)then cut the recesses using the table saw for the floor.
I sliced up a heap of 8mm jarrah strips on the saw and thicknessed them down to 6mm for the floor of the drawers and cupboards and the back of the unit. used the table saw with a 2mm blade for the t&g's.
The drawers was the last thing i built because i wanted to make sure they would fit with the roller guide things.
Hope this Helps.

Nice work, Did you cut the dovetails by hand.?
Reality is no background music.

No way
I used the router in the end. I tried to do it by hand but failed miserably.
I was glad to be a sparky that day - my hand made dovetails are crap!
So it was off to timbercon to get me a jig and a router bit and guide plate.
It was surprisingly easy with the cheapie jig once i got it set up. Took about 6 practice runs with the pine to get the jig/bit height sorted and to get my confidence up, then on to the good jarrah. Got 8 out of 8 success rate.
I love the look of neat dove tails when you open up a drawer.
