Default First project - DVD Storage

This is my first real project. I've done a little bit of woodwork before but this is the first piece of 'furniture' I've made for the house. Our DVD collection is too big so this is the first of 2 shelves (a corner unit is in design at the moment).

The shelves are held in with dado joints that where cut with the Triton in crosscut mode. Then the rest was just cut to length and put into place.

The pine was from Bunnings but it was twisted and warped. There were no straight planks of wood at all so we just got the planks that where least warped. It straightend up reasonably OK once the shelves where in place and the whole lot clamped together.

All in all it was a fun project and hope to make a few more things real soon.

Great effort. It's very satisfying to complete something like that.
You get a greeny from me.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

So you used the infamous Bunniata Pinus. Easy to get but always twisted and warped. You will be better of getting your timber from a timberyard where they stack them properly.

Well done, looks good, a greenie from me too. Make sure you post details when you make the corner unit.

Don't know Al, the Crapiatus Radiata is still reasonable to work with but the Bunniata Pinus is so bad that it must be its own specie and only suitable for the DIY people.

Seeing as how you put it like that, maybe there are many species of Pineus Crapiatus??
Have you heard about the new species Pineus Crapiatus, sub species Miterus X

    Welcome to the forum Digger.

Impressive first piece. How did you do the moulding at the top?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

    Thanks all.

I think I will definately be trying to find another source for timber. Went to Bunnings tonight to find more and every single piece was warped. Is it because they stack it on the ends or do they just by second grade timber?

The moulding at the top is just a piece I bought and cut using the protractor on the Triton to fit. I don't have a router yet but Christmas is just around the corner so I may get one and then be able to do my own mouldings.

I've had the woodworking bug for a while now but handtools and straight cuts have never gone together for me. The Triton WC looks to have been a worthwhile investment already.

Nice proportions Digger - look foreward to more items in the future. Routers are a wonderful thing but can spit out a piece of wood quicker than you can blink. When you get the router well worthwhile getting a table for it too to handle the larger bits.
