It kinda looks like meranti or kwila or something similiar, i.e. an indonesian wood??

Is the entire piece sealed? Or did you just seal the surfaces you can see. On one of my first projects, I made a similar "mistake" but sealed the entire piece thoroughly and have not hade a problem with it for 3 1/2 years.
Whats done is done...thought it might help.
By the way...great looking piece!!

Thanks. Well, it has 2 coats of danish oil on all surfaces, does that constitute a seal?
You're right, what's done is done. I'd have to destroy it to fix the problems, so I'm just writing it up to experience. The recipient is not complaining...
