Red face First Project: Toolbox For My Meagre Collection.

Hi people, I have only just gotten into woodworking (well, I had a brief fling with wood when I was in my early teens but I lacked patience and spat the dummy) and I voraciously read these forums, here is my first project. Crappy radiata, handcut dovetails, finished with boiled linseed oil, no screws or nails .

I still need to make a lid. I'm not sure how I want to do this. I think I might make a lid that fits like a shoebox lid, sort of over the top of the sides. Any reccomendations?

    -Scissors

PS: Sorry about the terrible quality pic, the girl had my digicam so I was forced to use my phone.

Thats great specially for someone just starting into it.
Make a deepish lid so you can fit tools into the lid panel.

Congrats on your 1st project, we here have a name for "crappy radiata"... Crapiarta!
Before deciding on the lid configuiration, what type of use will this box get... does it need to be carried around or is it left on a shelf permanently?

It's going to lead a pretty stationary life. I was thinking of making the lid by cutting a rectangle the size of the outer dimensions, then fixing 4 sides to it, maybe with a single dovetail at each corner. Probably about 25mm 'overhang' (wood is 19mm thick, so total lid height ~45mm).

Speaking of crapiata, I have made one box and I hate it already, chiseling the end-grain waste was infuriating. (In fact, I cheated and used a combination of filing and chiseling the endgrain.)

    Welcome to the forum Scissors.

    Great job the Box.

I have not made any thing with hand cut Dovetail that I would show anyone. Now my jig make them great, as long as I use the right lines.

One of the best way to make a top to a box is to make it at the same time so the stock is the same lenght. Even better way is to glue it all together where the top is glued on like a solid block or cube with no way to get in to it. Then cut the top off with a band saw, table saw, router with small sprial bit, Jig saw, or hand saw

Here is a thread where the Mighty Zen ( is that a song title? ) make a fantastic little box and you can see in post #2 (number in uper right corner) Picture #4 where he has the box all glued to gether. Post #3 pic #2 you can see he taped in little shims that will hold in the grove that he cut with his table saw apart while he cut the the other side of the box apart. He also used that same shims to gule in a decrotive keys in the corner. http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=22540

There is another way to cut off a top, set your table saw blade just a little lower them the thickness of your sides and score a grove all around the box. them cut the rest of the way through with a blade of hand saw. Sand to clean up the ruff sides. Here is a simple Pic to show what I'm talking about.

    Hope this helps..

I was going to do that, but I sort of ran out of wood, and I wanted to get the damn thing finished. (And the DTs took me long enough to make me hesitant to pop it onto a table saw.)

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
