    Default My first two projects

Hello everyone I have been looking at the forum on and off for a while now and thought I might add my little bit.

A while back I decided I needed a bench top in my shed. We have some packing timber at work that would normally been thrown away to I got some of the storeman to put a few pieces aside for me for my bench top.

I machined the timber so it was nice and square and then simply used biscuits and glued them together. Once dried I went to a friends joinery shop cut the now flat piece of board to shape and put the whole bench top through his sanding machine to get it nice and flat.

Once I got back home I applied a finish and put the bench top into place.

In the end I was quite happy with the results of my first piece of woodwork since I left school and considering it was only going to be a workbench anyway.

The second project I decided upon was an outside table. After some planning I decided upon a 1800x1800 square table to make for a good entertaining area that could seat 8 people comfortably. I purchased some machined #2 clears cedar and headed off down to my friends joinery shop to make all of the required cuts on his bench saw.

I loaded up the timber and headed off home to put my jigsaw puzzle together. I couple of hours later my creation was coming along well. I chose to use oil as the finish for this task which I think has come up quite nice in the end.

    Very nice work, EddieV.

You've got a friend with joinery shop!? Keep that friend!

With your large square table, does it keep the people on opposite ends too far apart? I just ask because most large tables like this I've seen tend to be rectangular.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

    Thanks for the replies everyone

Zenwood - I havent really noticed that myself...i chose the square so it didnt put people as far away as a longer rectangle table. This table is not used in a noisey environment either so generally when we are talking you dont notice how far people are away because you are still able to hear them.

Most of my guests love the table and i have seen a few looking closley at how it was made and put togeather so they can potentially make something similar of their own. One thing i aimed for when making the table was not having any screws or brackets visable which sort of forces people to look under the table to see how i have held it togeather.

Nice Long bench there Eddie! I'm not sure how long the nice finish will last though

What about front or tail vices? Any plans? Ditto dog holes?

Also, what about a "Fumping Bench"?

    Cheers!

PS Very handy having some mates to allow access to a big sander, etc.

Nice work mate, I wouldn't want to scratch that workbench though, would you like to come and install one of those at my place? - I need a new bar...

Auld Bassoon - The finish came up great and it was a bit of a shame to use the bench at first...but like all good thingsit had to be used to be appriciated so i drilled the holes in it for the vice and have not looked back. I treat it like any other work bench now and it has a few extra scratches giving it character but its still good to look at the pictures and see how it started.

workgoose - If you were close by i would have considered making another bench top but sending one all the way up to bundy is a little far i think for what is in essence scrap timber. I brought nearly a ton of this stuff home just before the long weekend to use as fire wood why were were away camping.
