Recent Project
Al's post re old redgum posts has prompted me to post this pic of a blanket box I recently completed from old red gum fence posts. The only cost was $52 for camphor wood base and few hours of re-sawing, thicknessing and sanding of the red gum.
It is an adaptation (mainly due to timber sizes) of plans kindly sent to me by StevenP.
It is finished with a few coats of U-beaut Hard Shellac. After a few days I rubbed it back with EEE Ultra-shine, then a thin coat of Trad Wax buffed with swansdown mop.Last edited by Chesand; 25th August 2009 at 05:33 PM. Reason: Added more info

Very nice box. Normal blanket boxes are very plain. Your one is different.

Nice work, made all the betterer by knowing it was made from recycled timber.
Well done.

That's mighty fine looking. I don't know whether it's because of being older timber or as a result of the shellac, but the colour is warmer and more appealing than other Red Gum I've seen.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

A very impressive piece, Herbie - I'm sure you are pleased with it. It also looks to be "the proper" dimensions, and I reckon the finish is just right.

Beautifully done. I like the way the lid matches the fron panel. Looks great!
Cheers,
Dave...but together with the coffee civility flowed back into him

Nice work.....very nice
Those good old fence posts once their surface is scratched, that stunning color and grain just hit you after years of seasoning.
Cheers, Evan
