    Default Recycled fence picnic set.

I hadn't done any woodwork for years but got inspired when getting my fence pulled down. I made a single bench then worked up to this picnic set.

I chose a 'rustic' (rough?!) sort of look because I hadn't done anything for years and thought it would be a good way to hide any lack in craftsmanship I had!

All my joints are rebated in. Took me yonks to dress the timber with an electric hand plane and/or a belt sander. Took a couple of router bits out of action too! Fortunately they were all Dad's borrowed tools!

    Thumbs up

Looks good to me, I'd sit at it.

Thanks - made it when my first child was born. Can't wait until we all sit at it & eat together. I hope the kids grow up with it. Paving underneath it in a couple of weeks.

I hope to keep it oiled at least every 6 months (it's out in the open for now) so it will last forever!

If it did OK out in the open as a fence, it should be fine with a good coat of oil, just be sure that it is an oil that sets hard 'cos nobody likes sitting on a sticky seat.

I've noticed that - I can only find decking oil in tins big enough worth buying (4l). It does take a week to stop being sticky (although maybe that's because I don't wipe the excess off as per instructions!). I have only found furniture oil (thinner than decking) in small tins.

Plain old linseed oil, it kept tools well for older generations for decades. It only takes a day or so to dry, and can be lightly sanded at any time. Cheap as well.

I like your family ideals as well as your work too.

Thanks Buzz. Does Linseed oil protect against UV though? Does that matter? Just want to protect the colour of the timber.

Can I just wack it on top of what is already there?

I thought the idea of a picnic set was to be able to fold it up and go to one of our national parks for a picnic. You would need a 1 tonne table top to take that one.

But I would be proud to have it in my back yard for a barby. Great work Smiley

Yes it is a heavy %^&* (I should have labelled the thread "outdoor dining set/ table & bench"). Just a naming error.

It is designed to sit there AND NOT MOVE!

Nice work on the picnic table and seats, good use of old fence pailings.

But you did fail in the area of making an excuse to buy better tools to make the completion of work easier and better

Excellent work! I'd say it's worth a few router bits =)

I did a similar project using a fense that was taken down, but not as nice as yours. It is simply for decore.

WELL - that's very nice. Given me some inspiration!

I have vowed to make a letter box (12 months ago) as I found some wider than usual fence palings, but that would sit nicely in a spot in my backyard where not much seems to grow!
