Recycling a Jarrah wine box.
Several months ago my neighbour gave me a jarrah wine box (without the bottle) that he got back in the 90s. He was doing a cleanup and thought I may find a use for it. I put it aside and then refound it and gave myself a lockdown challenge of how many things I could make using the box materials.
First thought was a box. After dismantling there was enough for a box 160x100x75mm. The lining in the top and bottom is the original satin material.
There was some material left over from the sides and was stumped for a while until found a clock insert in my stash so that timber became a clock stand.
Lastly the bits left over were the trimmed off cuts and the perspex lid. The perspex gave rise to the idea of a photo frame. Cutting perspex I thought would be a challenge but with blue tape for protection and a clean cut blade on the jigsaw table it turned out to be a breeze. I fitted it with a photo of the neighbours from the 90s at our daughter’s wedding.
Finish after sanding is white shellac wiped on and rubbed back with 0000 steel wool with traditional wax and polished with a soft cloth. This is the first time I have worked with jarrah and I have to say the finish is most pleasing.
I will send the items over to neighbours during the week.

Will be interesting to see if the neighbour can work out where the timber came from without being prompted. Shame you didn't get the full bottle - yum!
