Default Red Gum,QLD Maple and Jarrah Jewellery box, WIP

This is a Jewellery box being made for a fellow forumite I said I'd post it as a WIP so they could watch the development.

So I started with a piece of 44 x 150 x 1.3 piece of figured Red Gum. I resawed the timber and planed it to give 4 panels (2 x 310 mm and 2 x 220 mm) to make the box carcass. Pic 1 shows the long sides. The box is actually 120 mm tall.

From here I sanded the internal faces then hard burnished Wattyl Natural Teak (Scandinavian) Oil into the wood up to 4000g. Pic 2 shows the wood soaking for 15 minutes with the oil.

Next was glue up and Pic 3 shows the box clamped and drying.

So now I made the trays. The bottom 1/3 of the box was converted into two long trays, with one of these being then divided into two again. The timber used was QLD Maple, with just a touch of figure, but beautiful grain. Pic 4 shows the inside bottom of the box.

The top trays were next and these were made with some stunning QLD Maple, some of which came from Mapleman. Fig 5 shows one of the top trays after oiling.

The two top trays are yet to be divided into 4 and a ring holder is planned.

The lid will be QLD Maple border with a figured Jarrah panel. That should happen early next week.

    Regards,

    Rob

Like all good projects, some things changed.
I couldn't find a bit of Jarrah that I was happy with for the lid, so I substituted a piece of Black Heart Sassafrass. And instead of QLD Maple for the lid border, I used some figured Red Gum that was a picture frame in another life. Pic. 1 shows the lid panel, with the two pieces side by side and ready for gluing. Pic 2 shows the pieces clamped together.
One of the trays still needs fine sanding and oiling, but this will happen tomorrow. One of the trays is divided into 3 and the other into two. This one has the ring holder in it, with spaces for six rings. Pic 3 shows the trays together in the top of the box.
I have a thing for quadrant hinges. I think they add an eloquence to a box, more so that stop butt hinges. I am yet to try the Smart hinge however. Pic 4 shows the rebates and groove cut for the hinges into the box.
Tomorrow I will finish the box and go through the lid construction.

    Regards,

    Rob

And so to the final installment.
The lid panel has been trimmed to size, sanded to 400 grit and then oiled. After 10 minutes of soaking in oil, the panel was sanded to 4000 grit. Smooth as.. and brilliant depth and shine. Pic 1 shows the clamped glued lid panel and frame. Pic 2 shows the finished lid. Pic 3 shows the reflection from my workshop window from the top of the lid.

The panel is now placed into the Red Gum frame and glued up. Then the frame itself received the same sanding regime as the lid panel and the rest of the box.

It just remains to attach the hinges to the lid , add two small light magnets to the lid and carcass and the box is finished. Pics 4,5 and 6 show the finished box and trays. Again you can see the depth of the figure present in the Maple and in the Red Gum. I do love a burnished Oil finish!

    Regards,

    Rob

Rob, in post #3, 2nd picture. How do you stop excess glue from sticking the timber brace to the lid panel?

    Hi Cava,
It's really just a case of being careful about how much glue you use. I use sufficient to give a generous smear across the joint surface and that seems to work for me. It pays if you well cut mitres as well.

    Rob
