    Default Redgum Burl Bowl

It seems the year for Sir Stinkalot to complete projects ..... this is number two.

This is a redgum burl that was purchased for $7.00 at the "Timber Benders" in Castlemaine (Vic) (Featured in Australian Woodworker a few issues ago).

The burl was put into my good wood pile for use when I get good enough. I had a friend around the other day who recognised the burl and asked when I was going to do something with it.

As it turns out I have a wedding to attend on the weekend so I made the bowl as a gift ..... I am shocked that I got it finished in time

The finish is as follows .....
Old Organoil that was left in the sandpaper (Did a very good job apply this way)
    Ubeaut's EEE ..... then Ubeaut's traditional wax .... then Ubeaut's Shellawax.
I just don't know when to stop applying finishes . All finished with the famous mop ... as seen in image #2.

Ok here it is with a couple of Ironbark pens for scale.

Very nice, what did you do the 'carving' with?

The carving was done with the Arbortec and then finished with hand sanding .... the Metabo Duo and an old Black and Decker Work Wheel.

Beautiful colours in the burl... makes the pens look a bit plain.
Hows you're fingers feeling after all that sanding?

    Nice job.
I have a couple that I made about 12 years ago that are very similar BUT, I brushed the outside with a wire wheel in an angle grinder. It takes the grey off & makes the out side a dark brown/red.

I carved mine with an Arbotech & then power sanded the inside with 4" disks on an angle grinder up to 120 grit & the changed to a smaller pad in a power drill up to about 320.

I finished mine inside & out with about 5 coats of Penetrol. Slow process but they are still in use as fruit bowls today.

Clif .... On the outside I used the B&D work wheel ...... it is an old tool that I found when cleaning up my grandfathers shed. It spins around a flap wheel which has a set of brushes and sandpaper. When used on the rough side of the bowl it gets into all of the tight spaces flicking out the dirt and dust. It also gives a very soft almost finish ..... almost like natual wind erosion. It works really well.

I have no idea what good the work wheel would have been in real life but it works well for this task.

I had one... it was supposed to be good for stripping paint off difficult shapes, it wasn't very good at it & I (and every one else) found that you could adapt the wheel to an ordinary electric drill so the machine didn't sell very well & was discontinued... unfortunately, so were the wheels & bruches & sand paper for it.

I off-loaded mine several years ago... I suspect that it is still sitting in a 2nd hand shop in Townsville somewhere.
