For those of you that do have Photoshop, there is a "Save for Web" function. Firstly resize image and then use save for web. This optimizes the colours for screen use as well as compressing the images. The colour may look a little less intense than reality but (depending on the complexity of the image) will compress 1024 x 786 size images to ~50k.

If you don't want to run each shot thru an image processing program here is a quick and dirty way to shrink 'em:

    - open Windows Explorer
    - select images you want to shrink
    - right click and choose "send to" then "mail recipient"
    - you will then be given the choice of making all the images smaller or sending them original size
    - choosing "make all my images smaller" will open a new message in your email client with the smaller images as attachments then you can just save them to your computer

The images will be shrunk to well under 100kb.

I just gave this a few test runs to check some stuff and it's actually a bit cleverer than I thought. If you select pics that are already small then it doesn't resize them.

I'll second Irfanview. It's small, free (or was last I looked) and easy to use. Open the image, crop/resize to 800x600, select "Save As" then rename and make sure type ".jpg" is selected before clicking OK. Choosing about 50% compression will shrink it to between 20-40k or so.
I'll THIRD that vote for IrfanView. It is simple, EASY to use and FAST! It is only a 4+mb download.

I have been using IrfanView for years. I have and use PaintShop Pro (from ver 3 to 10), this is a GREAT photo editor and does do resize etc, but for quick and simple jobs like resize I ALWAYS use IrfanView it's just that good!

You can also do resizing in batches eg resize many images at once. BTW you can at the SAME time change the number of colours in the image and rename with your desired sequential names.

(PSP now has batch features, but IrfanView has had these batch capabilities for years)

It is NOT a full image editor, mainly a powerful viewer with USEFUL editing features, including resizing, adding TEXT to images and creating slideshows or SCREENSAVERS.

If you have Nero for creating CD's Irfanview can use it to create slideshows on cd for playing on DVD players.

Try it, I am SURE you'll like it
    Kind Regards

I have IrfanView and can resize the picture to 640x480 pixels
but after saving it is still 596Kb.
How do I compress it? with IrfanView.

    Hmmm?

I just did a resize from 2816 x 2112 Pixels to 640 x 480. The file size dropped from 1,540,038 (1.5+mb) to 44,523 (44+KB). I did not change the compression value from iss default of 80.

You can as you save the photo change the compression value used in the jpeg compression - this does however have an effect on the resulting image.

What I THINK you need to do is open the large file, resize and THEN save as a new filename. I THINK you are using the same file name - am I correct?
    Kind Regards

I'll add a third vote for Paint.NET on Windows. It's a very capable program, and the price is right.

On Macintosh, Look for Smallimage2 - it's a handy little utility, you can specifiy dimensions and compression and process one image or a whole bunch of them.

For either Windows or Mac, if you have Photoshop, then Save for Web does a good job.

I still reckon the MS Image Resizer Power Toy is dead simple.

Once it is downloaded & installed, it is on your right click menu.
You can select a whole pile of pics & resize them all at once.

You can get it from the Power Toy page or download it straight from here.

You right click on the file & in the menu their an option to resize, leftclick on that option & it will ask what size.
When it is finished, the new resized image file will be in the same folder as the old one with a name the same as the old one with (small) (medium) or (large) behind it. I find that the medium option works best for my camera & this forum.

My new favourite for Windows-machine image resizing (after trying JPEGCompress and MS Image Resizer Power Toy) is VSO Image Resizer.

It's free, slick and fast. Once installed you right-click>resize>OK and it's done. There are preferences for final pixel size of image, as well as compression, and you can even add a transparent watermark (see the 'zenwood' mark on my recently posted images).
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
