    Default Repro-Chippendale Mirror

The disscusion on Repros and their merits in the other thread prompted me to dig this out. Its a repro of a repro. The original was old and damaged and a copy was made about 80 years ago, and that got damaged so i was asked to make two more. One was sent to the owners brother overseas, the original copy was put away in mothballs. As usual my doona is the backdrop and the photo stinks.... Oh for a digi camera and propper canvas backdrop Anyway the fretwork and carving is an eagle and i didnt get a pic of the finished (gilded) mirror:mad:

    G'day Lignum!

From the essence of "that other thred" - what sort of Chateau or Castle would this sit comfortably in, especially when gilded

    Lovely work though. Hand carved?

    Cheers!

Yep hand carved and Scrol sawed. The blank for the eagle was glued on then carved. The pic dosnt show the detail that well but the tail and wings are carved back into the frame. It ended up being, shock-horror "stained" mahogomy and the eagle was gilded with gold leaf. Tacky but nice

Looks fine Lignum. Stained !!! Gold leaf !!! oh dear. ....Well, beauty is always in the eye of the buyer. .... You get paid ok for it ?

I haven't had much experience with carving. Something I've always wanted to do. Nothing too flash or busy though. Just nice simple floral like patterns to fill voids.

Keep posting your work eh. Don't care about the digital camera. Can pick up plenty from your photos. Expensive buggers though arn't they. I only got one because I wanted to film the kids before they grew up.

Great stuff Lignum . Maybe you could find someone who would exchange a digital camera for one of your works of art .One of your pieces would have to be fair exchange for one of the professional digital SLRs from Nikon or Canon

I use a clean white sheet for my backdrop (pale Blue would be better tho) and I have a 3mp FujiPix camera i picked for a couple hundred bucks 2 years ago (lot cheaper now - you could probably get one on eBay). I doubt anyone would trade a perfectly good dig camera for a fugly repro mirror . Very skillful tho cobber.

No mate, I had to chop and mill the tree then bugger me, I had to blow the mirror glass. Left me 9 minutes to actually make it....
