Rescued Project - Jewellery Chest
Another jewellery box of sorts.
I was asked to make a jewellery box, in Silky Oak, for a large collection.
I just happened to have a small chest of drawers in quarter cut Oak. This was actually a demonstration piece (& lesson plan) for a class I was to run on using the Leigh D4 dovetail jig. The class never came off so I had this lying around doing nothing.
Made some handles (Black Bean), added some feet & inlayed 2 X 2mm Black Bean stringing & the easy part was done.
All I gotta do is finish lining the drawers & it's away. Each drawer is divided differently.

Great craftsmanship MP!
But I feel the 1/4 oak is a little too heavily featured, what are your feelings on this box? Would you change anything if your were to make it again?....................................................................

Absolutely first class, another stunner. Interesting difference between the quartersawn and plainsawn elements.
I noticed the half-pins on the top and bottom edges of that open drawer are incredibly thin, going pretty much to zero at the apex of the dovetail. I'd be worried it might break off, or is it an optical illusion?
Anyhoo...beautiful stuff! Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Damn it, Major. You know the rest of us have no hope of attaining that sort of standard of craftsmanship. Do you have to keep rubbing it in? And where did you find that oak? Is it American white oak, or European?

Hi Major,
The Quarter sawn is spectacular. I'm really interested in the feet, how did you attach them?
Sooooo Inspirational!!
Cheers

another great box major, the blackbean handles and stringing set it off. are the dividers in the draw a permanent fixture or can they be removed if the need arises?

Major,
Beeaauutiful.
I quite like the figure, as it is only the front, and I'm assuming it is a smallish box (400mm wide?). All over figure, or on a larger piece, would probably be too much.
Do you do anything to enhance the colour of the Black Bean? or is it that dark naturally?
Very nice piece.

I was going to go on with some guff about how I find the Majors work demoralising because I'll never be able to achieve such a high standard but that would just give him a big head. Pretty average work Major!

Major, any chance of some info on how you go about doing that fine inlay in the top ? I'd love to see it. Don't have a video camera handy do you ?
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.
