    Default My resin coffee table.

    Hi all,

This was my first (and maybe last) experiment of a "big pour". About 9 litres of casting resin, finished off with 400 ml of Stone Coat Countertop resin for the flood coat. I got into all sorts of strife with this. More strife than speed gordon as my old Dad used to say. Ranging from the timber (slices of a very old huon pine slab) rising above my first clear coat which I had left thinking it was right for the night. Obviously the timber wanted to breath and rise to the top for air. I had sealed it all, but,...! When I removed my clamps I was certain the timber would not move after that as the first layer of swirly blue was close to setting.

Then having to attack it on my home made router sled to take off the "risen pieces". Then pouring yet more clear resin over all that. Nevertheless it was a good learning curve for big resin work. The Stone Coat Countertop flood coat has given it a beautiful glass top on it. Scratch resistant, heat resistant, UV resistant, food safe.

    Overall size is 800mm x 400mm x 45mm.

I wont do another coffee table this size, resin alone was around $300. I have a lot more offcuts from slabs, burls etc. Thinking of more an occasional table around the 500mm x 400mm size, with the same legs.

That is one impressive table but it won't be of much use being attached to the wall like that
That's the problem with resin, the price adds up quickly once you get out of your normal box lid sizes. As usual, you have been confronted with adversity and you have overcome it, so well done again.

Hi and thanks Dallas, glad you found my pics. It sure was a learning experience on a pour of that size. When the project was fast becoming a disaster I took it over to a custom made furniture shop not far from here, where two blokes and a woman run it. The custom made furniture they make is amazing. I had thoughts of asking them if they could put it through their large industrial thicknesser and just take the top down to get rid of my messed up router cuts. But the woman said she didnt want to do that, as the amount of resin there would jam up their blades etc. She said just put it back into your mold again and pour another few mm's of resin over the top of all of it and it would hide all my mistakes and come up looking great. She was right. Rough it all up first, I attacked it with my belt sander with a very course belt. Did what she said and wow, Fixed it all up brilliantly.

This woman runs courses on timber and resin. The 30 minutes or so standing at the back of my car talking about this project, I learnt heaps from her.

    Hi Paul,

It’s always special when you see a resounding success made from a potential disaster. Congratulations on a great outcome which must be a huge relief after all that work.

    Best regards,

    Brian

Hi and thanks Brian, yes one watches blokes on youtube do all these sorts of things and they make it look easy. I'll keep that table and won't make any more that size. I'll cut the mold down to about 500mm x 400mm and make a smaller occasional type table with the same legs system. And learn from my mistakes with that large one.

How are your veneer projects coming along of late.
