restored chest of silky oak drawers
Here's a silky oak chest of drawers that I got from a second hand shop in Cairns, it had that 'wonderful' japan black stain on it which took forever to strip off and get back to the original timber. The photos aren't that great of it finished, but it has some of the best quarter cut grain on the drawers and mirror supports I have ever seen, very pretty. Technically I didn't make it but it DID need new drawer runners made as the old ones were kaput so that counts as woodwork hey??? The smaller set of drawers was found in the lifeline store...took ages again to get about 6 layers of paint off it but it also looks pretty nice too, both have solid wood sides as well instead of the more usual veneer. Hope you like them, seeya

Very nice work. what did you use to strip the old finish?

Just used a satin polyurethane finish, stuff like wax doesn't seem to do too well up here with the humidity for some reason plus the varnish is more hardwearing as well.

I used Accent paint stripper, we get it in the large tins as we go through a fair bit. It works quite well and it goes on easily because of its thick consistency, although with the two chests in the photo required repeated applications (around 3) plus a hit with the pressure cleaner. Someone had tried to restore the larger dresser by just slopping a coat of something on it as well as having the wonderful black stain, the smaller one had been in a shed by the looks of it with oil stains and the thickest coats of paint I've yet seen but with lots of patience and stripper...

Excellent work, what a transformation! I would never have imagined that the smaller piece could have come up looking so good.

They look great Womble, but may I suggest that you put some handles on the drawers of the larger one as they are a bugger to open without them.
