Nice work. IMHO, for a box like that, box joints are perfect. They're strong and look good, and are relatively straightforward to make. The she oak came up well. Did you find it hard on the tools?

It didn't seem to blunt the tools overly, Alex.

The box joints are not quite as clean as I would have liked. Pretty good but small chipping along the edges. I mixed superglue and fine sawdust to clean up the small gaps.
Chisels cut cleanly when I was preparing the recesses for the brass hinges.

Unfortunately I managed to snap the head off one of the brass screws. Maybe I'll put a bandaid over it and hope he doesn't notice?

I just did a third trip to the Hardware shop trying to find a matching set of hardware.........
Almost managed it.

The brass looks good with the red/golden brown timber.

A nice leather handle like you have on a leather suitcase/briefcase, would be perfect. Unfortunately this plastic thing is the best I could find.

One day I will find one and replace the plastic handle.

Now to take it all apart for another coat of oil. Maybe one more in the morning then I'll put it back together and pack it in the car for the Christmas trip.

That is the presentation case for fine firearms.
Yeah, I can see it. Open the box on a table at the club.
Purdy, H&H, Guerini in 12 & 20.
Hand out towels to wipe up all the drooling.

With the Weatherby's in it, Those guys need to see the box.
You might be able to sell the copyright for their advertising.
A couple of kilobucks in your pocket for a picture can't hurt.

What RV said. There is a considerable amount of kudos associated with having a nice hand made gun case or stock at the club.

Don't know what it would get - I guess if you have the right buyer and the right maker, and the buyer wants to score a few points at the club, you'll get a good price. I know that many shooters are prepared to pay good money for the right gear. (Not like woodworkers.)

I've been a member of the same shooting club for 35+ years.
We have Pacific Automatic Traps with voice control.
Peaked at 12 shotguns but nothing over $4k. Just 2 left.
For the first 20 years, we shot all dang day.
Then it got to be 50% visiting.
Now it's 75% visiting and we shoot a round or two of trap
when we get really ambitious, provided that Sandy hasn't lost his cane again.

Really good shooters would be interested in a case like that.
I'd be inclined to fit some very fancy brass corners to it.
After you drop $15k - $30k each for a couple of trap guns,
you've earned a good case.

The ones who would most likely part with a big wad of money are the
ones we refer to as "all hat and no cattle." Ask $5k, take $3.5k and run.

I am getting excited about making gun cases with all your great comments and likes.

Some of my brothers do a lot of hunting and shooting. We grew up on a farm when rabbits were a huge problem. I learnt with a powerful 0.17 cal air rifle. It was head shots or nothing. My brothers now have some very fancy rifles and go though a more rounds than I would have used in a year on the farm. Maybe not as many as you Robson.
They have mates who have the same interest in guns.
Maybe my nephew will rustle up a big spender or two for me.

I tried a couple of different corners but they didn't look right. I might look around the web for ones that would be more suitable.

My nephew was pleased when he opened his Christmas present and the rest of the family made nice comments too.

That is a beautiful case, the box joints look great and your choice of timbers work harmoniously.
I also love seeing a glue up smothered in clamps
