This is the rocking horse i made for my grand-daughters for Christmas
I bought the rough carved horse and fittings at Melb WWW Show
I made the stand and after staining finished the lot with 4 coats of Hard Shellac and polished with EEE Ultra-shineTom

You must be the best Grandfather ever with a great looking horse like that . The finish is great . Do you apply the hard shellac with the traditional swooge .
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Real nice horse - I'd love to know who you got the fittings and hair from?
Judge not lest you're judging yourself

Thank you all for kind comments
The final result was certainly worth the effort.
I bought the horse and all the fittings including mane and tail from Viktoria and Chris Woolcock who had a stand at Melb WWW Show.
Their website is
www.rockinghorses.com.au
or phone (02) 4577 8697
The horse was $420-00 and the fittings $375-00 (I got a small discount by taking the horse home from the show) All up I spent about $850-00 as I had timber for the rails and part of the stand. I cheated and bought the posts from them for $30 as it would have cost almost as much for the timber and I would have had to turn them.
I stained it all with Herdins water stain (unfortunately no longer available in Aust) - a mixture of Oak and Mahogany.
I sprayed a coat of White Shellac then did the white socks and black hooves and shading. The spraying was wasteful do I did the final coats of Hard Shellac ( thinned about 25%) with a mop brush. I did sections at a time with any joins at spots that I knew would be covered by strapping. Fortunately the weather was cool and joins were not visible. I light sanded with 400 paper between coats and after 3 days polished with EEE Ultra-shine.
Hopefully it will become a family heirloom as my grand-daughters are currently 3 & 1/2 and 1 year old. I always wished that my kids had had a horse so that was the motivation behind this project.
Hope this inspires you to have a goTom

Oh that mob from Windsor. I do have something to say about him. I believe he can make a “rocking” “horse” in 2 days. Is it still $999? Well never mind.
