Rowing shell
I'm guessing there's not been many of these seen on this forum. This is my recreational rowing shell (skiff), finally finished. I finished the hull some months ago but the sliding seat, riggers and oars have been a slow back-burner project.
The hull is based on the Oxford Shell by CLC Boats, modified to give a slightly more robust boat. The riggers, seat and oars are my own design. I tried to use recycled materials where possible. The drop-in rigger/seat combination is made from English oak recycled from a wardrobe, the plate aluminium is from a cooler, the riggers (the V shaped wing) is made from Rola roof racks and the footstraps from an old sailboard. The oars are just prototypes at this stage, which is why they are both different, as I was trying out as many alternate concepts as possible. The 9.5 ft long oars are made from a solid lump of timber, hand shaped. Nothing technically difficult about any of this build.
Its not meant to be a racer, but is surprisingly fast nonetheless. On the boat ramp, its a show stopper - its surprising how many people are interested in recreational skiffs (business opportunity for someone perhaps).
cheers

More photos. I'm conscious of the fact that it has been a hard job getting the information needed to make this boat, so I'm hoping to perhaps be useful to anyone else going down the same track. Heres a close up of the drop-in sliding seat, oars, and what I call the "canoeist's view".
cheers

The hull is marine plywood - stitch and glue method. The plywood is Fijian Cedar - which looks surprisingly like oak. There isnt much solid timber in the hull but what there is is American white oak.
