Rustic trophy
Hi there,
A mate and I are organising a boules (or more correctly, petanque) tournament through the local pub, for tomorrow. I have been involved in many private ones, sometimes with 12 players divided into 3 or 4 matches, this is the first more or less public one. We play to local rules, but they have been posted in the pub, so no-one should be able to object. BTW I have been partaking of a rigorous training schedule, which involves weekly trips to said pub!
In the past I have made trophies for the champion and some of them are perpetual (for instance we have a regular Anzac Day one), and there have been trophies for "shot of the day" (shot de jour), and cock-up of the match etc. Most of them are pretty tongue in cheek, like gilded McDonald's toys on a base, whereas another mate tends to donate the tacky plastic ones from trophy shops, but it all adds to the fun of the event.
The latest one I've made is sort of mechanical in a rustic way, created from a fan hub, a motorbike con rod, several hydraulic hose fittings, 2 castors with 4 beer caps and an unknown farming funnel thing - all mounted on a routed lump of spotted gum. There is a nice little roundel of mahogany salvaged from a piano sitting under the con rod. Most of it is bolted or screwed together, with some parts MIG welded, and all the metal of the base was sand blasted (in a homemade cabinet). Its called the Cabarlah Boules Cup, and will hopefully find a new owner tomorrow!
Cheers,Andy Mac

Nope, its the Farmer's Arms, reputedly the oldest operating pub in Qld. Have to call that a technicality, as it was moved there from another location! http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&h...&t=h&z=15&om=1
Building up for storms here this arvo, hope it holds off till the tournament's over...

I like it; it has a kind of religious look about it.
I'd be interested in some more details of your homemade sandblasting rig. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

That looks great.
An expressive piece from a true 'bricoleur'.
