    Default SBs Weekend Tambour Project

Well I've been working on this tabour scrapwood project I found in 'Woodworker's Journal, February 2010' at my local news agent. I made the gift box version with two shelves but it's designed to hold two wine bottles but I like my wine inside me, not inside a box all hidden. It's my first project making tabours but only the ones you stick to a canvas backing. I made it from Silky oak and red gum scraps. Now I guess I have to get back to finishing the mother and baby rocking cradle I suppose. enjoy

    oh so cool!!

How did you find the canvas and staple/glue method for the tambours? would you use this method again?

    Cheers

Wendy, I only glued the tambours to the canvas and so far so good. It's not carrying any heavy weight or large area of wood to move so it works fine. The instructions say to wax the slides the tambours slide in before you assemble the box. For this small project I'd use canvas again but I plan in the future when I make a full size writing desk to get the router bit set that makes proper tambours.

    thanks SB

I made a tambour door myself, ages ago, and used the glue/canvas/staples method. The back looks clunky but it the front looks wonderful.

I was going to use it as a front for a wall-mounted ironing board cupboard, but unfortunately it ended up being so heavy, it would have pulled the unit off the wall. So it is now another unfinished project sitting in my shed gathering dust

I'd be very interested to hear how you go with the router bits.

    cheers
    Wendy
