miniature cabinet
My wife asked for a jewellery box. I saw this design in a book on boxes. Its a darkside (plus thickensser) job, though with 40 sets of handcut dovetails it did try my patience. I thought that as a miniature cabinet it wouldnt take long to make - but I think it took longer then a full-size job. The timber is red cedar with coachwood for sides and bottoms of the drawers. The internal dividers are also coachwood, as cedar is not durable enough for the action of drawers sliding wood-to-wood.

Here is the near-obligatory photo of the construction detail of the drawers. This photo shows the fantastic grain on the coachwood drawer bottoms. I used real timber not ply for the drawer bottoms - it will be problematic but the effect is probably worth it. I have also included a photo of the back to show the beautiful flame effect of the vintage red cedar I used. I love this timber. All timber is recycled from bedheads. For those wondering about expansion/contraction of a real timber back, its 2 pieces floating between rebated frames fixed top, centre and bottom.
As I mentioned, this was a darkside job, but I did most of the cutting on a mitre cutter. I'll put a post about this in the general woodwork section - I think I'm on to something here.

What a beaut! I've always had trouble with cedar being so open grained. What's the finish, where did you find the plans and did you mow the lawn specially before taking the snaps?

I agree - it's a lovely piece and a great advert for your mitre cutter.
BTW what are the dimensions of the piece?

Top stuff again Arron, where do you get the cedar pallets from?
I have a few questions relating to the drawers though (for all, not just Arron).
I know that cedar is too soft for the drawer runners, or is it? I'm thinking that a jewelry cabinet such as this won't have a great deal of wear, no load in the drawers and infrequent use, so maybe that is not such an important consideration?
On the other hand, it is 2006, so I wonder if a very light smear of epoxy on the runner surfaces (with a light sand) would eliminate all concerns regarding wear. It's something I'll consider if ever I graduate to building things with drawers in them, but wouldn't mind hearing a few thoughts.
Cheers,
P

Very nice work, Arron! I can appreciate the hours put into those dovetails, too! I hope I can do dovetails like that one day!
