Nothing to dovetail to there. Apparently the shakers didn't like the exposed end grain along the side there, so that is a sliding dovetail holding a cover in place, glued at the top only.

I think the shakers were right about that.

Alex, I'm giving them both away, but will need another flooring pack before I build another.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Tex
The solid timber looks good especially with the big dovetails.

The danish oil has done a good job with the timber colour.

    One qustion.
How did you fix the mitred edge to the lids?

Thanks Scally. The shakers used a tongue and groove there. I used sliding dovetails because it was more fun, and also holds the molding to the top where it's not glued. The side molding is only glued at the miter. Not sure how the shakers held the back of the molding in the groove, maybe they didn't.

beautiful chests, Tex. The 'hand' cut dovetails look great, and any mismatch of panels is not noticable because of the beauty of the DTs.

Did you think of mitreing the base, instead of DTs?

I like the battened lid, and use of nice-looking hardware.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

I think the sliding dovetails are a great choice.

Don't you just love the Leigh jig.
