model ship display cabinet
Hi folks, a real labour of love this one. About 90 hours. Somebody donated a model ship to our yacht club so I was asked to make a case for it. Didn't look too hard until I checked the measurements. A whopping 1350 x 900 x 550 cabinet -plus the table. All solid jarrah and all morticed joints. Glass is acrylic. Finish is shellac and wax. Swan on top and badge below were carved on my homemade router copy carver using mdf templates from Bunnings. Ship is called the Swan but is actually the Bounty. The backdrop was taken from a photo off the internet and I had it blown up on canvas and mounted to an mdf backboard by a picture framer. Around $1000 for materials but nothing for me. Delivered it yesterday after a very slow 20kmh trip with it standing in my old 6x4 trailer trying to miss the bumps.
Hope you like it,
Lionel.

Beautiful work Lionel. I totally agree with the others about getting your name on it. When 'someone' has to move it, clean it, relocate it, take it higher ground in 100 years time it would be good to have them reflect on the workmanship of the craftsman named Lionel 'all of those years ago!
BTW, did you try turning the model around so it 'sails' the same way as the backdrop? I think you'd be surprised at the result. If you look at the top museum exhibits you'll note that they don't have anything sailing, flying, driving or tunneling out the door.
A well deserved greeny from me and I hope that the club at least gives you free beer 'til Christmas, Fletty

Ive had little brass plaques made in the past at engravers, cost about $15 each.
Screw em to your work, its worthy of it, that way in 100 years time ppl will see that you took the time to produce good quality work that "you" deemed fit to sign.
I also sign my work.

For the pieces that I'm willing to put my name to (not that many yet ), I've had a branding iron made up. In your case, though, I'd go with the brass plaque. Turning the model around is a good idea.
Cheers!

A magnificent cabinet: something to be proud of. Definitely worthy of a makers' mark of some kind.
Like some above, I wonder about putting a picture of a ship behind the model of the ship: the purpose of the cabinet, after all, is to display the model. I would have either had a blank backdrop or an empty sea and sky.
I aspire to the day when someome asks me to make something:eek:Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Throw the boat away. It only takes away from the elegance of the cabinet.
Catch ya later,
