Default New shed cabinet to house the growing collection of toys!

    G'day,

A few months ago I built a small cabinet as a sharpening station, and to also house my chisels and planes.

However, the number of sharp-edged inplements just seems to keep growing - so I needed a new cabinet. As well, I wanted to try a large(er) surface for veneering with some Cypress recently acquired. I'd built a small weather station and veneered the top of this with some Cypress quite sucessfully a short time ago.

Sooo: I edge jointed some pine (crapiata) for the base and back, ditto some Meranti for the sides, and with some 12mm ply, made the doors faced with Cypress veneer. A motley mixture, I know, but workshop scraps - except for the Cypress.

A couple of points and questions: Edge jointing boards is quite straightforward so long as the boards are square (perhaps even a tiny poofteenth hollow along the edge - but doing so with thin (2mm) veneer is, ahem!, "challenging"! - getting the edges straight is ok, but clamping causes bowing or, worse, cracking: any ideas or suggestions? Should I very slightly mitre the edges of the veneer a la "/\" ? One problem that I had (as will be apparent in the attached pics), is that the short lengths of Cypress that I used were, after jointing, dissimilar in width due to knot holes, etc - should I have accepted the waste and reduced the broader board to the same width as the narrower board? (as it was for the shop I wasn't too fussed, but the point of the experiment was for making furniture and whatnot)...

Still, the recently revived, tuned and (with a new L.N. blade) old Stanley No8C, Veritas No6, and L.N. L.A. Smoother, helped achieve a good flat and consistent finish.

Anyway, some pics: the 1st shows the planes, etc in their new home; the 2nd shows the cypress veneer front; the 3rd & 4th show the two sides - each with some tool holders, and the last a closer shot of the innards.

    Cheers!

Auld Bassoon, you make my collection of planes look positively picayune!
Love the cabinet and the concept. However I do see a number of old friends in your cabinet. Only one I miss, my most oftened used, is the LN 41/2 with HAF. Great plane at almost all times.
I just seem to be unable to find the time for improvement projects, like your cabinet, or the new workbench etc. How did you manage to twist the priorities to that externt???
    Well done me bucko!

    G'day Lou - and thanks!

My favourite L.N. Whew! that's hard as they all have a special role (or two) to play, but I guess that the one that I reach for most would be the No 4 Smoother - but that's a close tie with the L.V. LA Jack - just such a versatile all-rounder, and one of the L.V LA block planes - just so very handy!

I've got a L.V No6 jointer coming along soon as well

Finish on the outer panels is just Wattyl two-coat gloss (it got five, with a couple of intermediare fine sandings)- wanted to finish off a can; actually I generally prefer a satin finish.

    Cheers

I'm with Al. I need your address and details of when you go to bed. Also if you have a vicious dog. Thanks.

    Steve,

That's absolutely great. Great you got practice making a tool cabinet because it is far too small.

If you calculate the rate of your tool purchases and project that rate into the future you will need a much larger cupboard

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Wow Steve theres some mighty fine armoury in/on and around that nice shiny cabinet. Wonder if my workshop will ever start looking like yours - maybe one day.

    G'day mate.

I live at Al's place, and have a really nasty Anaconda, with a Brown slithering along in his wake - a fine pair of watch-fangs

    Cheers!

Well done, Steve. You are certainly sliding down the slop at an increasingly precarious rate of knots. But not to worry - there is a looonng way to go yet

With regards jointing the 2mm veneer, something I've not done before, but I do have an idea.

I would use a shooting board, and to keep the veneer flat, instead of using a clamp, hold a flat board (MDF, Ply, etc) over the top while you shoot. Trim only a .5mm at a time to retain rigidity/flatness.

    Regards from Perth

    Derek
