    Default Shikaku stool

I finished building a copy of the Shikaku stool by Ishitani Furniture this morning.
    (Link: YouTube)

I used American White Oak offcuts I got from a local woodworker.

The seat was a bit too short, so I decided to add some breadboard ends to get a little extra length. I fastened these with drawbored pins - the centre pin is fixed; I have elongated the holes in the tenons to allow for wood movement.

I haven't got a lathe so I shaped the legs using a drawknife and spokeshave, the staked tenons are tapered and wedged.

I used a soap finish. Overall quite happy with the result, this was my first attempt at building staked furniture. Looking forward to building another stool soon!

That looks really good. The white oak is a good choice appearance and strength-wise.

That's really nice. Your joints look fantastically tight.

    Thank you!

...I may have selectively photographed the best looking joints

I actually got quite a bit of tearout drilling the mortises for the legs - I have an old set of auger bits that haven't got the knicking spurs - I have used these successfully in green timber in the past, but this seasoned oak was an entirely different story. The carved seat helps hide the worst of it fortunately.

Great work. You'll see Ishitani typically use his radial drill press (a beauty!) with the Star-M type bits. They leave a very clean hole with little to no tear out and there are versions for a handle brace type auger as well as the drill press variations. I have them in most sizes from 16mm up and they are brilliant!

I have seen these, in the US they are marketed as "Wood Owl" bits. I'm going to pick some up for my next project for sure.

Where did you get your augers from? I haven't been able to find an Australian supplier for them

I don't have the longer auger bits. My Star-m bits I purchased when in Japan. I know Japanese tools australia sell them, too.
