    Default Simple computer table

Computers seem to be multiplying, so we needed some more sitting room in the computer room. This simple table is radiata pine, with some hardwood edging made from timber recycled from the old demolished shed. The legs and apron were made my laminating 19 mm stock, and the aprons were joined to the legs using my interlocking dowel joint.

Finish is two coats of shellac and some traditional wax.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

It's all about what you don't see.

Nice and simple design, works well. Computer looks a bit lonely

Nice table Zenwood. The hardwood edging makes it!

great job zenwood looks fantastic, the little lappy looks a little lonely all by himself. I was thinking of using shellac on my next project, but not sure on how to really use it. What are your thoughts on the process and are you happy using it. well done
    cheers Mick

I agree like the hardwood edges

I am part way through making my new one not as nice ply and pine.

Shellac and wax has become my finish of choice. The look and feel are great.

I'd like to be able to make the application a bit more even, but I think it's just a question of fine tuning the technique. Both brushing and applying with a pad I find tend to leave marks behind, whether I apply it very thinly or more thickly.

Anyone know of a finishing course in Adelaide?

Hi Zen, have you tried different fabrics? Perhaps a finer cloth would work better for you?

    cheers

Interesting suggestion Ruffly. Baically I've always used the same kind of lint-free linen made of a wad in the middle and wrapped with another piece around the outside.

Wouldn't a finer material wear out very quickly? Mine develop holes pretty much after each application on a surface as big as this table top.

I think what would be really valuable would be to watch a video of someone who knows what they're doing.

For completeness, I've attached some of the design drawings. The original only had the hardwood edging along the front, I changed my mind during construction, as you do.

Interesting indeed! I'm currently using an old cotton/polyester quilt cover, cut up into squares. I haven't noticed any great lines/hollows/markings etc, but then I haven't looked that closely or done much shellacing in the last 5 months either

So far so good, Harry. This picture is the same joint under test (in the thread linked to in the first post) withstanding up to 233 Nm of torque.

If any of my joints fail, I promise to let the forum know.
