Sometimes you can be in the right place.
At the right time
Lucked out yesterday…big time for me anyway.
Our annual festival was on this week (yes the infamous jacaranda one) and of course is markets with all the regular “showies” there. My Darling Wife suggested we go to the big market yesterday “you never know there might be some old tools there” was the bait…. Well there was…plenty of them wandering about aimlessly and I had to fight my way through all of them and after much searching found a second hand tool dealer. Anyway he didn’t have much there, bought an old titan 5/8 mortice chisel, and while having a yak, he mentioned he had a full set at home, & was I interested? ….Bl$%dy Oath I said.
Turns out he lives only 5 k’s from me (Yeah yeah I Know….search the bl$#dy countryside for years for good tools and it’s been under your nose all the time)but I’d never heard of/seen him as he spends 10 months a year on the road buying and selling. Anyway went to his place and looked at this set, they were some sort of real good patternmakers set, Sorby’s and the like, I wouldn’t know what to do with them and so we had a good old natter about Aussie tools looked about 50-60 bench planes he had, as I was leaving empty handed he said He had some old mixed unrestored chisels in the other shed if I wanted to check them out…..
I ended up with a handful, at a unmentionably great deal, some are Titan, R Sorby, Swearbys, well you get the pic.Bruce C.
