New Stool
Been busy lately doing up this stool and it's pair.
Legs are splayed at 5º top is 400x400mm. It joins to the legs using mortice and tenon joints. I used dowell joints to put the braces in but would use a mortice and tenon next time. It was very hard to get it all to go together on one as the joints were a bit loose.
Finish is shellac with a bit of wax over it. I might give it some extra wax later to get it really nice.
Who likes the rustic look?

Rustic is right. I All most did not see it there.
If it was not for the fact it was aginst a wall it would blended in to the floor and dispeared .. I would be proud to sit on that with my sawdust covered JeansJunkBoy999

That looks great! Nice camouflage. What kind of timber did you use?

E.Maculata Help
well that is a tough question Tex
The floor is Cypress Pine was part of my first major project.
I think the Chair could be Bolly Gum but I am not sure. My Dad the carpenter says it is definitely a Eucalypt but beyond that I don't know.
I hope E.Mac or one of his mates will be able to help us out a bit with what it is. Would be nice to know. It was a bugger to plane, tore out really easily.

Nice work Studley. I like the way you have the legs on the 45. Rustic with attitude.

Thanks all. Harry the timber is quiet different to the Yellow Stringy Bark I had here. It is a pale blonde colour with strong grain structure through it like pine. I did think it might be Bunya Pine but E.Mac reckons no one goes deep enough into the wilderness to get any of that. Looking at the pics in the Timber Buyers Guide I thought Bolly Gum is the one. Colour is different because I shellaced it with a fair bit of "Cedar" colour in it which gave it a red tone.
With the angle on the leg I had some real fun with maths. The splay is 5º and so I had to draw up all my triangles to work out the lengths that it was at the points I put the braces in. On the face of the brace it had to be cut at 45º one way but it is also 3.5º angle between the bottom of the brace and it's top. After all the thing is smaller at the top than the bottom. It makes about 2mm difference to the length on each side of the brace.
I will get a camera and show you a pic of the wood so you can see.

Here is the picture. On the left is yellow stringybark. Mystery (Bolly Gum I think) and Cypress Pine. Gives you an idea of the colour of our mystery wood.
Cheers

Some very tricky details on that stool, mate, and a great looking result. Greeny on way.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

I didnt think yellow stringy was so red? None of the pack I got is that red... its mostly all pale tan and yellow's(and very waxy... tallow I think?)

It wasn't that hard Niki. I guess the hard bit was working out the angles and also planing it all back to get rid of the tearout.
I'll see if I can get Zen to help me do some drawings so you can see how it works.
Actually Harry in the pack there is some that is a bit paler than the Yellow Stringybark which I think is Antarctic Beech. The Tallowood is a yellow green colour and really waxy from memory it shows pinholes when you plane it too.

I am trying really hard to get a different photo of the timber up but it doesn't seem to be working for me now.
