Something for the study
Hi All,
I wanted to have a play with my new L.N. chisels (and practice my dovetailing "skills" ). Also, I'd just collected some Cypress, sooo...
Jointed a length of Cypress, and got it nice ' square in x-section, then resawed part of it into a couple of 2mm panels, trimmed these and glued 'em onto a ply backing board.
Hacked up a dovetailed box (only way to describe my amateur mucking about!) using some Meranti that was lying innocently around, and made a mitred frame from some Tas. Oak for the Cypress panel.
Got it all planed & scraped smooth, 3 holes, some Danish oil, and in go some weather instruments that were just sitting there in their packets, and voila:
Cheers!

Nice one, not a bad piece piece of Cypress either! Let me know when the pressure drop's and the big front is heading in!

Mmmm gorgeous box. The cypress wood and the brass go richly well together. Dovetails are great.
What was the cypress like to work? Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Not bad at all; actually easier than I thought it might be. I thought about applying some stain, but thought to experiment with some Danish Oil on a scrap piece already smoothed (one of the circles cut out for the instruments - and it looked good. Maybe not conventional, but I waxed (Ubeaut, of course, creep, creep) it as well. Has a really nice sheen
The Meranti was much more difficult as it just wanted to split all the time.
Cheers & thanks for the comments!

No stain used, just Danish Oil. Doesn't open, but the back is removeable!

Great, really nice bits of kit. I have noted that the hornmeab handles are a little loose in their sockets though. Any suggestions anyone! - and epoxy is OUT!
Cheers!

Thanks mate! Getting there - slowly. Having nice tools that are really sharp is a bonus. No mallet required, just a little pressure, and that lovely little ssshhniccckk sound.
Cheers!

If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

socket chisel handles get tighter as they are hammered. just work with them and they'll tighten up. well done on the box.
