    Default Surfboards and Skate Decks...

    Hi all,

Thought I'd post some pics of the type of woodworking I do.

I've been making these for about 2.5 years now, I make surfboard art pieces with resin that range from 3ft long through to 5.5ft long. They are either wall mounted (if smaller size) or stood on custom acrylic stands if too large to wall mount or the client wants them that way.

The surfboards are not functional...although I do get asked that question more than any. I always reply with "would you actually want to ride it?!?"

What are functional are the skateboard decks I make which are based on the same design principles, however a but more thought goes in to how they are made so they are strong enough to be functional if the client chooses to ride them.

I source all my timber from Trevor Gaskell at Burpengary as he is close to me, has a huge range to choose from, very well priced, high quality dried slabs and he's just a top bloke.

This year I have gone part time (3 days a week) for a day job (graphic designer for a signage company) that I have held full time for 16 years. I was starting to sell the surfboards and skate decks as fast as I could make them, so I made the call to devote more time to it and have a better lifestyle with my family and less stress from full time work. I feel very blessed to have found this creative outlet that I really love and provides an income for me at the same time.

Thanks for reading guys hope you like them.

    Cheers, Josh.

holey toledo batman, your not an amateur at this. That is amazing work,

guessing you dont buy small quantities of resin from bunnies eh?

Beautiful stuff Josh. I can understand why people would like to ride them, it looks like you know how to shape a "functional" surfboard too

Thanks Tonyz, no I don’t have a YouTube channel, bee asked that quite a bit but to be honest I don’t really have the time to do it...maybe in the future.

I use 2 brands of resin, one for casting that I buy in 20L kits & one for finishing that I buy in 10L kits. Ironically the finishing resin is almost as expensive as the casting for half the quantity.

Thanks mate...a lot of the techniques I use are the same or based on actual surfboard shaping, so I’d like to think I’d be at least ok at shaping a regular board. I’d actually like to do Stuart Bywaters surfboard building class, and make a functional timber one...one day in the future.
