    Default Side table

It's raining in England and so no cricket, the Pies are getting flogged and I'm waiting for the glue to dry..........(sigh)

Isn't it amazing what you can do with some spotted gum floor boards

The top is 80 year old blackwood from my grandmother's old dining table with spotted gum edging. The frame is all floorboards. Tomorrow i'll put the top on ang give it some Wipe-on poly or maybe Ubeaut shellac. not sure.

Its going to look great.I like the look of the top. Post a pic when it is all assembled. The floor boards have come up a treat.

top looks great Gumby, but tell me what kind of joinery did you use for the mitred spotted gum edging to compensate for the movement in the blackwood?

Since it's about 80 years old, I'm not expecting the top to move. The edging strips are glued on. Am I correct in thinking this ? (hope so )

I'm a bit disappointed in the finish at this stage guys. Not sure if I'll bring it in next week. I will bring the larger one i made from the carport beams however.

This one is a bit of a rush job but then again, that's all my impatient nature allows me to do anyway.

The spotted gum is so damn tough it's hard to smooth out those little marks in it. I've been at it with a card scraper this morning and it does look better though. I also think I've got the proprtions a bit wrong. The top is a little too thin and i think i should have cut the gum side rails thicker to beef it up a bit. Oh well, it's all a learning curve. I wonder when that curve straightens out a bit

Timber always expand's and contract's, no matter what it's age, even after a few thousand year's. Best of luck during summer with your nice tight mitre joint's.
By the way, the table is nice, and man isn't that spotted gum hard as rock! Also, sorry, but I cant sympathise with you about the Pies.........Go Doggies!!..

In that case, I'll stick it in the fridge on hot days - problem solved.

Good effort, Gumby, for a rushed job, as you've stated.

Nice tight mitres, as we would expect.
