Default Side tables Huon n myrtle

    Hi all

I have just about finished my side tables.

The evolution of ideas that stretch our notions of function or materials and eschewing technical boasting and sophistication to be always accessible in their intention and narritave, non-embarrassment by tactile surfaces and passion for clarity and light. It is not simply the placing together of meterials but is something entwined with the intellectual and emotional world of the designer. The challenge is to develop insight and a sense of possibilities within this personal language and while restraining raw creativity.

Actually thats not mine but lifted from a woodwork mag and I thought it was such as toss that I just had to include it

What I meant to say was that I tried to do something very different from the norm and am in two minds as to how it has turned out. I made the bases first and then the top sections.

What do you think, does it work or not  .

The top drawer section is just sitting on small blocks and is not secure until i decide whether to stick with the design or split them and use the bases for a small lounge side tables and make up different base setup.

This is the first furniture project that i have made using rough sawn timber and dressing etc from scratch. Still need to add a couple of more coats of finish.

Finish is "Rustins" danish oil. I tried a few finishes on scrap including white shellac but in the end preferred this finish.

Huon is from Island Specialty Timber and Myrtle was from Gondwana Timbers at Lower Longley. Both top quality.

Anyhow pls have a vote and dont spare the rod if needed.

    Cheers

    dazzler

As they are now they remind me of period French furniture... all flash and glitz. Too much "bling bling" for my taste but I like the form, it has a nice degree of elegance, and time will soon fix the contrast.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I agree with Ironwood, they need to be positioned where it doesn't compete with other furntiture. It's good to see work that isn't 'run of the mill'.

    Lovely design and execution!

(I'd have used a wooden knob, though).

If I was to criticise anything at all in such beautifully done pieces, I think the accents on the tops of the legs just take the focus away from the top. That would be the only thing. Truely, the very first thing that popped into my mind was one of those long legged machine critters out of return of the Jedi. Sorry

Having said that, the workmanship is beautiful and I can see them in a modern type loft residence or somewhere where interior design is quite bold and striking.

    Nice

I would not totally agree, but maybe a slight hint of the same dark wood in the top to compliment the highlights in the leg joints perhaps??

I honestly didn't notice it until pointed out to me. I think it's a beautiful piece! I'm an art deco fan myself, so this is right up my alley.

    Good work!

Dazzler - First Impression - WOW!!!
Second Impression - hmmm. I feel that one or somehow both the leg accents needs to be repeated in the top section, either the leg shape, or the dark timber.

I can see why you are undecided on the design, and in all honesty, if you are undecided then there must be a reason why. Gut instinct is normally pretty accurate.

But besides all that, the tables do look beautiful. I really like how the top sits up on the blocks - that would be my favourite part.

    cheers

    Thumbs up

    Hi dazzler,
I really like the design, stands well above the average side table we see. They would need a special room to do them justice, space around to really appreciate the design features (not like my bedroom where they'd be squeezed between bed and the wall). I love the leg treatment, and the timber contrast, although something seems odd on the drawer front...the grain seems to be running diagonally!? . My only criticism is the top panel arrangement, simply because of the recesses between framing and panel. It doesn't seem a practical thing having that lip, either to catch glasses or books slid across it, and hard to clean, collecting dust, hair etc. A boring, practical criticism.

I reckon its a beautiful thing!

Excelent Daz My only "mild" critisism is the drawer frame is a little to thick and bulky. Lessining it by 15 or so mil will give the top a bit more of an elegant look.

Oh can you plz give us all a run down on the three way miter as it looks like you have done a superb job on that

    Well done

    Dazzler,

I also thought of the War of the Worlds tripod machines, and I liked them.

As others have said, beautiful work. I actually really, really like them, they are different and have an architectural look, modern and also Art Deco. Well done. I even like the leg accents, as they are, where they are and would not add to the top. In my view to add some dark timber bits to the top would be too much as it already has two colours. Just my opinion, sorry to disagree Treebutcher and Wendy.

Like the mitred corner joints as well !!

If I were to steal your design to make a set for myself I would have the top all flat, only because I find it easier to clean when it is flat. I have a small table that is recessed like yours and it is extra work to get the dust out of the corners and against the lip and I am a lazy bugger when it come to housework. A flat top may not look right but that is what I would live with.

I also agree with your general comment on the text in blue. The first and last sentence are grammatically incorrect, the first is not even a sentence, no action verb, (or whatever it is called). If you can't construct a basic sentence then perhaps writing should not be your career I say. I don't attempt it causin I don't got such good Inglish meself. In another life I was exposed to a great deal of this sort of writing, (journalism ?). Very disappointing.

If you decide you do not like the table I will gladly take it off your hands to save you having an almost right table hanging about. Am sure it would also look very much in place in a ritzy Sydney apartment with harbour views.

In any event don't let any views put you off straying from the norm or doing things a bit differently. Bottom line, if you like it, then it is OK.

    Cheers

    Dazzler brilliant pieces of work..

Reminded me of War of the worlds not Star wars then thought spider.. photography is great isn't it but don't think seeing the 2D representation is doing them justice they need to be seen in 3D. once i got over the whole arachnid thing the only thought in my mind as to what I would like to see is the top drawer section wider so it overhangs the legs.. but is that just my sense of "normal" kicking in..

Let us know what you end up deciding I agree with rufflyrustic go with your gut.. then ignore what we say if you so desire

Well Done on craftsmanship standards alone

Personally, I don't like them as Bedside Tables. I am sorry , but this is MHO. I think they could work very well in another room, & the workmanship is spot on. I also think it is fantastic that you had an idea & turned it into a reality, but above all else, I could not agree more with Pops. It doesn't matter a tuppeny toss what I think, it only matters what you think. You were smart enough to come up with a completly different design, & you were smart enough to build a stunning piece of furniture. I have no doubt that you are smart enough to find exactly the right place to put that furniture. Congrats on a lovely piece of work Daz.
