Tall Coffee Table/Desk/BookCase/Holdall of important bits/Sofa Table
One of the few items I have finished this year, is this tall coffee table/Desk/BookCase/holdall of important bits/sofa table I made to sit beside my Recliner Chair. I have no idea what to call it, other than Extremely Useful.
My Woodwork & Leatherwork library is close to hand, there's room for my EEE notebook, some sewing stuff in the Camphor Laurel tray, some lace for plaiting, my stand of ribbon for another idea or two I have brewing and underneath, a very sturdy shelf for the pile of woodwork magazines I browse through every now and then. My Mum always taught me never to sit in front of TV without doing something productive, I guess that lesson kinda stuck - Thanks Mum!
The table is made from a mix of timbers, the common theme being the colour and their strength. Let's see, the legs are from pink bloodwood (thanks Craig), the shelf from jarrah and blackbutt (thanks Sam), and the top is from locally-sourced sydney bluegum.
The top is held down with the tassie oak buttons, which work an absolute treat. It's been heaps of fun building this one, taking into consideration the movement of the top with the bookshelf support, but it's all worked out well. Finished with wipeon poly and some coloured wax.
Heaps of fun and very useful. Hope you like it.
Cheers

Very nice, Wendy. Reminds me of some very fashionable furniture in the 60s, only yours is better made.
Great work.

- Now I'm channelling the 60's!! Must be all the older woodworking magazines I've been reading. Thanks Tex
Christo - you should see the rest of the list I've got to build for the house now. One down, about 15 to go.
Well, I am the ultimate screw and glue Girl! I haven't done myself any favours by learning that first before some of the better woodworking joints
"De-bietza" it is Wheelin' Thanks
No, I hadn't given up, just got majorly waylaid by life and work, but that's a whole nuther thread by itself. So yes, I'm settling back into normal life and most of all, getting back to my sanity saver, woodwork and here
Cheers

That's a neat unit!!!
Did you deliberately design it that way, or was the design dictated by what you had?

Hiya Artme,
The basic design came from what I needed it to do, i.e. carry lots of weight due to the number of magazines and books it would be holding; and keep my books upright , be at the same height as the chair air.
The finer points of the design, as usual, came from the timber I had on hand. The wany edges of the bluegum and it's grain, the colours/contrast of the other timbers.
It's not obvious in the photos, but the overhang on the LHS (our LHS) is much more that the overhang on the RHS. I chose this orientation to ensue the grain was square to the base but it also matched the angle of my chair to the wall as well. Once I figured all that out, it was all systems go to keep the wany edges and put it all together.
cheers
