Tallboy to Match Bedside Cabinets
In June 2010 I posted this https://www.woodworkforums.com/f40/be...binets-119792/ on this site.
I've now completed the matching tallboy and post here for your criticism/appreciation. As always, there is a tale to tell and I'll try to include some of the 'unexpected events' along my journey.

This was the start of the timber processing. This is NZ kauri (Agathis australis)that I salvaged many years ago and which started life as the floorboards in a hospital ward built in the 1880's at the Adelaide Children's Hospital.

IMG_0461.jpgIMG_0462.jpg Cock-beading added
IMG_0460.jpg Top (Corymbia nesophila) Melville Island Bloodwood glued-up. I used this timber on the bedside cabinets so wanted to use the same timber again. I originally obtained it from a sawmill in Cooktown. So, as one does, I returned to Cooktown to get some more and guess what? The mill had shut down!!
A very long story follows but the nub of it is that I eventually got some from the fellow who had bought the mill and lived in Muchilba!! Oh, it's a long story and I won't bore you here..

IMG_0494.jpg Where to place the drawer pulls (brasses)??
DSC_0031.jpg Inside drawer. Solid bottom - alternating hoop pine (floorboards from Empire Hotel Toowoomba built in 1930's I believe) and cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) - from a tree that was struck by lightening and will be the last time I ever use timber from a tree that has suffered this fate. So much timber wasted! The slips and muntins are silky oak (Grevillia robusta) that were a friend's balcony railings in a past life.
DSC_0012.jpg Drawer sizes. Domino joints.
DSC_0012.jpg Done! Five coats of tung oil followed by two coats of wax - Traditional Wax, of course.

Love the breakfast trays in the bedsides. Discrete and very useful. I do the same in my bedsides. Any chance of a photo with the tray out? Others may appreciate the view.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Gorgeous!!!
A couple of questions:
* How ell does the Melville Island Bloodwood work? Being a Corymbia I guess its pretty hard.
* Th sliding dovetail runners - do the drawers become unbalanced when you pull or push them?

Thanks for all the very encouraging comments. Always means more to receive accolades from one's peers!
Enfield Guy here is an image of the tray almost fully extended on the bedside cabinet:

Artme...the Corymbia is very hard indeed as well as being brittle and heavy as anything. I did most of the flattening of the original boards by hand and although this was very time-consuming, working across the drain was relatively easy, but working 'with' the grain was unbelievably frustrating. Talk about cranky! Both the grain and me both!! Tearout is a major issue and, of course, occurs when you least expect it! I spent a lot of time using my HNT smoother in scraper mode and I've become something of an expert in tuning up my other hand scrapers. But hey, who's in a hurry?
The dovetail runners are a treat. In fact once these are 'tuned' they are an absolute pleasure to operate. There is no wobble at all and I hope I don't ever regret not using central runners - dovetail or otherwise - on the larger drawers on the tallboy. Come to think of it, I don't think dovetail runners would be suitable for larger drawers.
Tearout was also a major PITA with the cedar of Lebanon and this combined with the 'hidden' fractures consequent to the lightening strike and the fact that I had to discard more of it than I actually was able to use made this aspect of the task a chore rather than a pleasure.

A first rate job and the quality of the build stands out. Nice bit of recycled wood too. Ticking all the boxes.
