Default Taronga Zoo Chimpanzee Enclosure Construction

My name is Steve and I am currently constructing the timber component of the new, under construction, chimpanzee enclosure at Taronga Zoo.
Its an interesting challenge and I thought some of you may be interested in what we are up too!
We started the project in March 2010 and aim to complete early 2011- weather permitting!
The logs are red iron bark being harvested from Forestry south NSW, sourced through Buckwood saw mill in Braidwood.
Basically we are cladding structural steel columns with 500mm girder logs.
We still have a long way to go, but if there is enough interest, I will keep this thread updated
    Check out the photos below.........

I think you've got a great job! I'm interested, even if no one else is. Keep the photos coming.

    Thanks for posting.

I second that. A little more explanation would add more meaning to some of the photos but there great.

You've certainly fired my boiler so keep the WIP coming. This is something entirely different - for me at lest.

Fascinating work. I do have to wonder at the cost of the project, the real value to the chimps (or is it the viewing public) and the cost to other animals.

I too would like to see more images and a description of what's going on.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Sounds and looks like a mega project. And you have taken into account that the chimps are really strong (and clever). Much stronger than a human I've heard.
    I'm interested.

(And what happens to the middles of those logs?)

Wow, it must be costing a bomb but isn't it great that we spend the money on our close relations. Please keep us posted on progress it's a very worthwhile project.

    Hi Tricon, and welcome.

What are the gaps for between each log segment?

I'm guessing you'll put tyres in the gaps

Thanks Tony, but when I look at the photo with the guy at the base of the pole I wonder why the segments above his head aren't touching end to end, you can still see the steel post inside the timber cladding. Am I missing something?
