    Default Television stand

I had the chance to get in the workshop over the weekend and completed the television stand.
It was based on a cheap unit I bought from Kmart a couple of years ago but the micky mouse 'cardboard' used for the shelves couldn't stand the weight of the TV and DVD/surround sound system and they bowed over time so much so that the drawers underneath were supporting them! I decided to remodel it and threw out all but the metal frame and put a new top, shelf and drawers.

I resawed the timber for the drawers as the weight would have been excessive and then dovetailed them with 'Mr Gifkins exceptional jig'. I used shop bought runners for the drawers but had a billy nightmare getting the drawer fronts to align due to the 'play' in them. I certainly wont use them for such a situation again.

    Regards

    Mike

Great work. I love it when people get creative and improve bought items. I've never seen steel (maybe that's being kind if it's from K-Mart) and Jarrah used together in this way. It gives me some ideas, which is usually dangerous.

Mike, I really like reusing old stuff for new ideas. I think the jarrah goes well with the stel frame and by the thickness of the boards you will never have problems again.

    Well Done!!
Have a nice day - Cheers

Nice work Mike. I am a big fan of mixed mediums like wood and steel.

    Top notch effort.

Nice work Mike. I use those drawer runners all the time without problem. In case you dont already do this, i attach fronts with double sided tape, whilst drawers are shut, then open & screw from the rear
    Thanks Kev.

Very solid work Mike. Can't see the shelves bending this time.

    Great Job mike.

It looks very good and I too love the metal and wood combo. I love that way the Jara looks outside. If you get a bigger TV you can let you neighbors watch TV too.

Looks great. Echo others' comments about jarrah and metal: go really well together.

The drawers look very deep. Or is it just the height of the fronts?

Looks very nice and great colour and grain . IMHO would've looked even better with stainless steel . The metal drawer runners are very convenient but a bit sloppy as you say .

    Kev,
I fitted the slides to both drawer and carcase first then used a clamp to hold front panel to drawer and drilled through pre drilled holes in the front panel into the drawer front BUT when the bolt for the handles was put in place the front panel was not square. I have only used hardwood runners in the past.

Mike the only prob with clamping is that the drawer has to be open to do it. I recently used same runners on my workbench, and drawer fronts were cut out of cabinet timber so that it looks like one piece (2 drawers side by side 200 mm apart), with only 1 mm gap all round. I fitted the drawers then shimmed fronts with thin card for gaps, and pushed fronts against carcass (dbl sided tape attached), then was able to open, clamp and screw with perfect result. I will add photos in a new thread on weekend of finished product. Im sure there are other methods (hot glue maybe), but this works for me.
    Thanks Kev.

    Zenwwod,
The drawers are just tall enough so that a video case will stand up in the drawer and wide enough to get two side by side. However, I have started putting them in laying down so that the labels are facing up so that I can see what is on them! Some of my best designs have suffered modifications in use. It remind me of a saying I was told at school "If you fail to prepare you are preparing to fail".

    Kev,
I clamped the drawer in place while shut, one at a time. Having had time to mull the problem over it I think that it was the action of clamping the drawer and front panel together was the problem. On previous projects I have also used hot glue but on this occasion I didn't ...
    Hindsight is a great thing.

    Regards

    Mike
