Default A long time between bowls (pics)

I don't consider myself an expert turner... far from it, more a newbie actually.
I have made 2 bowls previously but that was over 12 months ago now.

I decided to get back into it and selected a very cranky looking piece of eucalypt (exact type unknown, but the smell gave it away) with a grain that was just as cranky!

So armed with my semi-blunt bowl tools, I went to work. What a PITA this bit of wood was to turn. Rather dry, nasty grain going in many directions and at least one dig in (you can see it in the pic), but I like it, it adds character and reminds you that it is indeed a raw chunk of wood you are looking at.

This old bugger of a hunk of wood did deliver a surprise... a nice segment of quilted grain that is really accentuated in the right light, and looking at it from the right angle.

Anyway here are the results. A bit rough with plenty of visible tooling marks.
A bit rusty on the skills but had fun nonetheless. Next time I'll find a more forgiving chunk of wood

It's only small, using it as a money dish for the loose change. Finished with a couple coats of shellawax.
How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?

    Hi Cliff,

Does Mango fill the air with a distinct eucalypt smell when turned? I've never turned Mango??
How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?

    Fair enough

Looks like I'll be needing to cut some blanks soon and try a spray finish or two!
