    Smile Time? For Christmas Gifts

These as an idea are nothing new but they are handy for those that get them.

The bigger clock is a redgum burl slice and the smaller just a block from a pallet from Brazil. I have some nicer examples done but not the photos.

The larger clock is finished with burnishing oil - mechanism $8 with numbers from Carbitec.

The smaller clear lacquer block clock mechanism $19 but you need a Forstner drill bit (either 32mm or 34mm) to countersink.

For anyone is interested I will have some of these timbers free to good homes on Sunday at Midges and if you like I can also bring along some mulga - waxed ends unseasoned rounds in the mulga same price (free ). Slices similar to shown in redgum. Anyway will bring them and see who wants plus some other redgum burl slices without all the gum holes - some very nice colours.

The examples shown took less than one hour each to do and some of the block clocks came up really nice.

Just some ideas and maybe others out there have some great ideas for gifts too???
    Cheers

Ianab has made these for Christmas presents http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...chmentid=13456

Gazaly recommended these http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...chmentid=12521 as a great idea for Christmas presents with a bottle of their favourite drop inside.

More ideas?? Simple cheap and quick to make is always a bonus for a number to be made.

Below are some good examples from AWR 28 on block clock set ups.

Quick, easy, cheap and with interesting timber look great - I have done a couple in silky oak and mulga and they were quite appealing with the sparkle in the oak and the contrasting colours of the mulga heartwood against the sapwood polished up.

Any other ideas for Christmas gifts - even if you have the idea without the picture - please contribute

    Cheers

    Great Xmas gifts TEEJAY.

I've been giving away timber birthday/Xmas gifts for years and I am always looking for new ideas. As someone else has said on this furom, the more money I save by not paying for gifts, the more I can spend on tools.

My mother already has bowls, pens, clocks, trinket boxes, perfume sprayers and a keyring holder . I was going to make one of RufflyRustic's photo albums this year, but ran out of time, so she's getting yet another bowl . Mind you, mums love anything their sons make .

    Cheers

Neil it is a shame you can't make it this weekend to Midges as Ruffly is bringing her famous photo albums for show and tell. I'm considering it a project present for mum - wonder if I might have to buy more tools to make it Hope so!

PS Thanks for the extra ideas - your home site has plenty of photo examples for anyone here to view http://dai-sensei.com/

Of all the Christmas presents I've made, this is the one that is most popular. I've had a number of requests this year from friends to make one for them to give as Christmas presents.

    Hey Neil,

I'll swap you a small Photo Album for one of your beautiful SheOak pens or if you can't bear to part with them, how about one of your Tibouchina{?} bowls - Interested?

I'm trying a new pattern idea on some Kwila, am hoping to have it done ready for Show and Tell and Learn on Sunday at Midge's, where hopefully someone will have a digital camera

    cheers

DPB - they are fantastic clocks-watches! Beautiful work. What a great idea.

Teejay - Famous Foto Albums????
Sorry, no new tools needed, just a drilling jig which I haven't made yet and maybe a mortising jig, which I also haven't made yet, but should have. - Hmm, maybe a drill press?

    Cheers

Ruffly you open up another possibility for people here if they make a job lot of items and then chose to swap some with other woodies they have a variation of gifts - has merit .

A drill press/ morticing jig bugger Nothing new there. I can always complicate the process to invent the need for something .

DPB What a wonderful use of the clock insert - that's truly great - it would be very popular with kids and teenagers too, infact all ages.

Damn y'all!! Now I feel like a scrooge. I know I am, but that doesn't mean I like to feel like it.

One of my staple Chrissie pressies is a slightly different clock. It's basically just a blunt/damaged 10" TS blade embedded into a roughly 8"x3"x1" piece of timber stock and fitted with a clock mechanism. Great for workshops & garages.

When made for fellow woodies I often don't bother cleaning the blade and instead of numerals I drill & use rivets or small nut'n'bolts as hour markers. I have polished'n'chromed the odd one though, with ornate painted numerals but they're the rare exception...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.
