Towel rack
The good lady wife wanted to buy a cheap-looking, made-in-China towel rack for the guest bedroom. Affronted, I undertook to make her one from tassie oak. A couple of weekends later here's the result. For fun (!) the joinery is all hand cut/chiseled M&T joints, except for the dowell which I drilled out with a forstner bit of course. I shaped the ends with a jigsaw (bugger of a job really in 36 mm tassie oak) then rounded it over with a router. Finished with oil and wax. She loved it, and now I have to make one for our bedroom.

Ahhh, the floor. My pride and joy. Over 120 m2 of grey ironbark (Eucalyptus drepanophylla), beautiful stuff. The guy who installed the flooring was a real timber buff and a bit of a greenie so he approached it as a labour of love. the floorboards are secret-nailed but of course you can't nail-gun such a hard timber so every nail hole is pre-drilled and hand nailed. Again because of the hardness of the the ironbark he broke a drill bit about every 20-30 holes.
I've made some furniture our of offcuts but it really takes a toll on any tools. It's hard and heavy. To give you an indication, the density of Jarrah is about 835 kg/m3 and ironbark is 1105 kg/m3. On the hardness scale Jarrah scores an 8.5, Spotted Gum 11, and ironbark a 14. (see here)
