    Default Toy locomotive

My young fella, like many 2yr olds, is mad keen on Thomas the Tank Engine, so I thought I'd knock together a wooden train for Xmas. Here's a shot of the finished item taken on Xmas day, with the happy boy on top.
Its made from scraps of Hoop and Kauri pine, with Spotted gum wheels, and includes a few extras like the powdered milk tin boiler and assorted plumbing fittings. The main wheels are joined by steel cranks and coupled to a piston & cylinder near the front, for that "authentic" steam train action.
I spent too long painting the loco, then rushed the detail painting, Xmas presents seem to be like that. The open truck is prolly coupled too close, limiting the turning circle ...should have made the hooks instead of using commercial cup hooks. Anyway, the main judge reckons its fine as it is!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac

Top job Andy - I reckon you could have left it unpainted and he'd still love it!

Well done Andy! Is it just me, or have you been AWOL?

Why not make him one of these for his birthday? http://oilycog.com/mysimon.htm

    Cheers,

There's something very cool about a dad making wooden toys for his son. Well done!

I suspect he'll grow too big to ride on it very soon, though.

Great job Andy. When he grows out of it, it can sit on the shelf. When he gets too old to look at it, it can go in his cupboard, and in fifty years time it will be back on his shelf for his grandkids to play with. I can hear him now: -
"Be careful with that. My old man made it."

Great job, Andy - and one that will be appreciated for years! I love the paint job you did on it, too, by the way!

    Cheers,

Thanks for the comments! A closer photo would have shown up a few dicey things, but may have included some other details, like the cow catcher and the lifting coalbox lid.
Its a good feeling to see kids enjoy the things you make!

    Cheers,
    Andy Mac
