Our trip way out west
We went even further than "the back of Bourke" to a place called Wilcannia. Tom's sister is a teacher out there and she married the other teacher. It's very remote and dry, makes you realise that we really do live in a "wide brown land".
We had the fortune of meeting up with a local Baarkintji man named Woddy Harris. He is a wood carver and showed us around his home, featuring many burl bowls, boomerangs, didgeridoos etc. Thought I would share these with you, including his carving tools. (Woddy gave us permission to take photographs and was very proud that we wanted to).
Thought you might enjoy them!
(Tom, his brother Jim and Woddy)
Cheers

And some more of the land... (and us playing silly buggers). There were these amazing trees that grew in multiple trunks and plenty of burls etc. I wish we had a large petrol chainsaw...

Thanks for the photos Dan and Tom. Those works by Woddy look great, and then to see his somewhat limited tool kit!! ... I reckon he must be a patient sort of guy.
There are you two, eyeing off all the unusual and twisted bits of trees, we know what you really want to do , take bits home and create furniture in the Dan_Tom style!!
And isn't it harsh looking country, but beautiful too.

Wilcannia eh? You've certainly taken the 'going bush' thing to a new level. You'll have to make a chainsaw part of your kit on the next trip. I'm sure Teejay will be able to give you some good tips.
Cheers,
Keith

A beautiful part of Australia. Wilcannia has unfortunately had some press because of some of the locals.
Hopefully some of their problems are being addressed so we can all experience and contribute to the magic of the region.- Wood Borer

Wongo! I am sure it reminded my Mum too (she's still grimacing, I was a 10 pound 10 baby, followed shortly after my brother who was the same and is now 6 foot 7 - I am a wee 6 foot 1 now...).
Gazaly, I think we got a little "cabin fever" after being in the car for so long and the usual tripod set up photos of us standing straight didn't seem to cut it any longer! There was much running around mad in between points of interest! It amazed me that we could get out of the car in the middle of nowhere and there would be 100 flies there to greet you. I don't know whether many of you have seen "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" where they stop the bus in the middle of nowhere suddenly, but it was like that - a long, long straight stretch of road. The sky was so wide and open it was almost like you could see the curvature of the earth out of the corner of your eye.
AndyMac, it amazed me that delicate little wild flowers could grow out of a gaping crack in the red earth. How they survived I don't know. Saw heaps of lizards on the road and emu. And goats:mad: .
Waldo, this was Veronica's (Tom's sister) first teaching post. Nothing like diving into the deep end! Woodborer, the locals were lovely and not a problem or a negative moment was experienced. In fact, Aunty Marg (one of the Aboriginal Educators) made us all johnny cakes and kangaroo rissoles by the river one night! The river (the Darling) is at such a low level - makes me wonder why we farm cotton at all... same old story, the folks upstream take all the water and leave little for the folks downstream. Didn't see any of the famous Murray cod in the river! We also got to meet Badger Bates and Geoff Demaine (spelling?) - two artists in residence at the Wilcannia arts centre. What a treat! They were doing lino cut prints and wood carving. Might have picked up some local art....
Keith, we did think of Teejay... and were wishing we had more than a cheese knife with us at the time. All timber was left where it was. Except for a burl bowl we got from Woddy!
Cheers
Dan
