Valentine routed box
Sometimes you just have to do it.
Last night I decided to make a small jewellery box for Valentines Day - today.
No time to fool around.
I made two templates for the Heart shape.
One to rout the outside and one to rout the inside.
I used the bandsaw to cut 10mm off the small piece of WA Sheoak.
About 140mm x 160mm.
Then made a small frame to rout both sawn surfaces flat.
Place first template over the base and used a bearing guided bowl bit to rout out the centre. I left the base about 6mm thick.
The heart shaped isn't symetrical because I needed a thicker wall for the pivot pin.
I used the ozzie jif to drill a 6mm dowel hole in base and lid.
This will also help keep them aligned when finishing the outer shape.
Then I put the lid and base back together with double sided tape and bandsawed the outside heart shape.
Double side tape the template back on and rout the outside with a top bearing guided straight bit.
Then a 6mm bearing guided roundover bit for the lid.
Sand all over to 400grit.
A coat of Arvos.
Dff to bed.
Done.Scally

Talk about cutting in fine (no pun intended). I thought I left things until the last minute. NIce box.

A winner
Well the Heart box was a winner.
Whew.
Not many things get thought of and finished this quickly - check my "progress" on the Ultimate jewelery cabinet"
I had made the little Yin Yang boxes in my avatar a few years ago so I didn't have to work out the How.
For a moment I thought there must be a better way to flatten the sawn faces but quickly realised I didn't have time to find a faster/better way.
Fortunately there were no slip ups too.
And a good thing I have understanding neighbours. It was 11.30pm when I finished.
I call it WA Sheoak, Wendy. It probably has several names. I bought it from Henry when he was doing his cleanout a few weeks ago. I think I have about a dozen boards. My thoughts are maybe a sideboard/hall table/hunt table thing. (I am told that I need one).
Thanks for your feedback I am glad you enjoyed the box.
It is my daughters birthday party tomorrow??????????
Nah....I wont tempt fate again.Scally

WA SheOak!! Beautiful Stuff!!!!
How about one of those puzzle boxes, where the lid is cut in such a way that you have to open one part of the lid first, before the others will open?
not the same, but very similar and fun to do.
cheers

Thanks for the kind words.
It is good doing little boxes because you can finish them quicker than large cabinets, get to use special small pieces of timber and can experiment with design ideas.
Like Ruffly said, different lids openings make a little box more interesting. It is fun watching someone trying to work out how to open a box.
Yes Wongo, sometimes you do the right thing and it is appreciated.
CheersScally

Scally, I really believe that you should put it in the WW competition this year. This box is simple, unique and well made. Your workmanship is great. It will look just as good as any other boxes in the show I am sure.
