Well... from at least twelve simple pallets. (Just maintaining the tone of this thread. )
I reckon I've matched up four of the pieces to their creators. Based solely on my perceptions of their individual styles from other work they've done elsewhere in these forums. (And comments made.)
It'll be interesting to see if I've guessed any of them correctly... roll on Sunday!

Maybe the creator of this piece could submit/substitute a photo of a more direct view - they may receive a lot more (well deserved) votes if it is in fact for real.
At least that way I could pull these palings out I had another close look and IMHO you just can't tell for sure either way.Last edited by Robomanic; 22nd October 2008 at 06:47 PM. Reason: keyboard won't sit still

Carl, I don't think there is any attempt at trickery here. The shadow is created by a (copy I "think") of a famous statue by the sculptor Rodin, called The Thinker.
The little poem that goes with the entrants' statue actually alludes to this, very clever IMHO.
I think the whole thing is very amusing and very cleverly done, it also conforms to the requirements of the challenge, after all it is made from a pallet!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I think.
Well done Entrant #1

I'm with Carl here i don't think its spirit of the competition. if one person has been decieved it makes a mockery of the result

Totally agree. It is funny, but not clever, and I don’t think the maker would expect anyone to treat it seriously. (To the maker – Good one you bastard )
Put that aside, this competition is about woodworking skills not a visual art competition.Visit my website at www.myFineWoodWork.com

Me three - There wouldn't have been any problem in my eyes if it was just a 'sculpture' with no fake shadow - and then I would agree with with Big Shed and say it does adhere to the requirements of the challenge by only using a pallet.
And whether it was a joke or not, people have voted for it thinking it was a genuine shadow produced from the timber. If everyone knew from the outset that it was a joke, then I'm sure the poll would have been quite different

If you couldn't tell that it was joke then you've got problems.

Wongo, define visual art for me?
So these entries are to be judged purely on woodworking skills and not on their "visual art" qualities?
I for one voted for an entry that not only displayed excellent woodworking skills, but also displayed very strong "visual art" qualities (as I see them).
I think people that take exception to the "trickery" in Entry #1 not only take themselves a bit too seriously but also this competition.
I for one found Entry #1 delightfully tongue in cheek and applaud the person that submitted it, although I wouldn't give him/her high marks for woodworking skills in this instance.
Lighten up people, this is supposed to be fun, not an AFL Grand Final, there are no sheep stations on this.
