Wheelbarrow in progress
This is the wheelbarrow that has been my ongoing thing for a bit now. I think I might be able to finish it up today when I get home. Many many thanks to Ian007 for helping me out yesterday. I went around and together we turned up the wheel and spindle and bored holes for the spindle to go through. The holes don't go all the way through as the bit wasn't long enough. So it is blind at one end.
Yep hard days work yesterday. Drank Ian's beer, smoked his smokes well he paid for them even if he doesn't smoke, and watched Ian work. Got home about 11PM how did that happen?
Anyway here is a camera phone shot of the base getting bored out. All clamped up on the drill press. Ian says no one will believe it but here it is.
How do darksiders do this?

The idea was to make the whole thing out of wood. It is a prop that I want to have in my photo studio, for posing kids in. Toddlers can climb in hold the handles etc babies can be layed in it like a crib. There are a million crummy props out there being used by different studios around but I thought I can combine my two hobbies and produce something really nice. Will try and get pics up this afternoon.

You are a smart &&&& Zen. Dont you have a plane that fits in there so you can shave it perfectly smooth round straight and square?
Anyway it came up allright. Learned a bit more about finishing. Had some whoopsies because Shellawax disolves Shellac. I put a shellac coat on the bottom and polished over the top but OH GOD there are spots where the shellac has been got at and gone all thin where I splatted some shellawax on!

Looking good, Studley. Very impressed with those angled finger joints. We'll have to have a session so you can teach me how to do them.
I reckon a rough finish would probably look good. In fact, why don't you bash the hell out of it with a bunch of rusty nails, to give it that aged, 'distressed' look. Also, it needs patina. Would look great in photos, no?Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Looks good Studley, agree with Zen'1 bash it up a bit... just let the kids play with it on some gravel!
A darker coloured wood for a tyre would look cool?....................................................................

Hi Studley
The wheelbarrow looks great!! Let the kids loose on it for a while and I'm sure it will quickly get it's own patina I also applaud your idea to mix your photography and woodwork.
cheers

Very nice Studley. I also like the angled dovetails. Must have taken a bit of working out?
Cheers,

More pics
Thanks all for the compliments.
Wendy was pretty obvious, a girl that is into woodwork and you tell her that you are doing it for the kids! Win her heart every time.
The joins use finger joints. I thought about dovetails but there are too many angles happening for it to be really doable. I did the fingerjoints using a jig I have and worked out the shape of the sides and went from there. So the fingers are cut in square to the edge that they are on, so it slides together at an angle. Because the sides aren't parallel there must be some opening in the inside corner at the back and on the outside at the front. I can ignore that.
So far as finishes go I have been a bit inspired by our glorious leader so I am trying to learn about doing really nice finishes. I polished it up not for photos but so that it had more wow factor for parents who see it. Gives them something to tell their friends about.
In photoshop using some simple tools you can make it look different. First photo is the barrow, then photoshopped one and two. Lastly is a picture of the finger joint. I'd like to take credit for dovetails but I didn't do it.

Great work Stud one think id love to see, can you or you get someone else to whip up a quick metal spoked wheel, easy if you have an arc n oxy and would make your barrow sensational

You would be a demanding boss there mate. I don't have a Leigh dovetail jig with the optional offset to allow for the angle.
Could dovetail it and then use darkside methods (aka file) to get the angle in the bottom
Glad you like it. Photoshop is a whole world of it's own there is a lot there that can be done
