    Default Just like winning Tatts!!

Local school had a clearing sale today and I picked these up for $1.00, in good condition and I think they may have been off a plant stand or similar, anyway I have a few weeks to decide what to convert them into.
There are mortices on the back of the legs and on either side with what looks like a biscuit slot just below the top mortice, any ideas as to what it may have been.
The one first from the right in the group of four I cleaned up with my homebrew solution and a bit of steel wool to get a few years of crud off and it comes off well possibly negating the need for repolishing.
(Homebrew consists of equal parts of 100% meths, boiled linseed oil and white vinegar, Ahh grasshopper, polish on, polish off)

Just a few better pics as I forgot to set auto focus, also cleaned up a bit so these are before and afters.
Still trying to work out what it was as the top mortices are at about a 30 degree angle.

Peter, they are all carved identically, just that the photos show the fronts of two and the back of the other two.
Seriph, swap the legs for a 911
Is that an original mechanism in a new box or what?

hnmmmmm for a 911 ..... sure, why not

This (and 17 of its friends) started life as a Columbia Graphonola - small portable gramophone. A friend lost literally hundreds in a shed fire, thanks to an old valve radio he left running went he went to bed - stern reminder to all - anyway I bought 20 of the burned out grammo's and this was the prototype of what I made and sold to theatre folks I knew. These were possibly the easiest thing I had ever sold! Fun to make too ..... and learned some great new processes, as everything except the motor and tone arm, I made. The trumpet, elbow (bit that joins the tone arm and trumpet) and tone arm supprt were a real challenge, but fun to make.

Sadly, their uniqueness became devalued by the plethora of crappophones coming in from India.....but I managed to sell all mine very fast prior to the Indian ones becoming popular....and folks I am still in touch with, love their Gramo's and appreciated the workmanship and final result - they all still work of course (the gramo's, not the actors!)

here's another one. The gramo was a success, though its base less so I reckon (it had to be those dimensions to hold records though). This pic is basically the finished product in its raw state - when it was stained and lacquered it did look better.

But the owner still loves it and plays it when friends are over getting drunk
