Default WIP - The back room

Just after Christmas I packed off my wife and daughter to her parent’s house down the south coast so that I could do some work to our back room. It is basically a single car garage that was built detached from the house as an artist’s studio - my dad’s – before we bought the house.
It had been used as a semi granny flat, and exercise room. But had really not been finished and had started to become a bit of a dumping ground.
SWMBO cornered me one day and said that I had had nearly 2 years to make it a “boys” room and use it well. I had failed in this task , so now she was going to claim some of the space as a study. Currently it is nestled in our spare room, and there is not much space for study/filing/scrap booking/ reading etc. So being the proactive little might that she is, she got me off my behind to sort the back room out.<O</O
The photos in the first post are the original room less contents, then the ceiling going up (timber lining boards).
In another life I worked admin in a cancer care unit. The chemotherapy is packed in boxes and supported by LOTS of styrene panelling Only small sheets (300X150 and smaller). I managed, over some months to get the pharmacy to put aside boxes before throwing them out, so that I could recycle the sheets. Then spent quite a bit of time cutting and fitting them to the walls. The ceiling is industrial refrigeration styrene.
Firstly I ripped up the carpet and laid down a few coats of paving paint.
Had to rebaton the batons to get the ceiling panelling right. Then started the process of cutting to length and nailing the ceiling up. Decided not to bother secret nailing as time was precious and in the end it is still just the back room – can’t have it looking better than the house now can we.

    Cheerio.

    Part 2

Got some corrugated iron cut to 900 and panelled the lower half of the room.Wanted the rustic touch (even though some will spot it is brand new iron!!) The outside of the room has a corrugated bull nose pergola.
Co-workers son worked for a fencing company and I decided to line the top half in fence palings. Wanted to do this on the cheap so seemed the way to go. Wife freaked as she did not want places where creepy crawlies could attach themselves in her clean study. Decided she was right and went for the feature wall of fence palings and the rest gyprock.
Fence palings came in 1500 sections cut straight from the site, so had to denail, cut to length, then planed, sanded and gave them a wash with thinned down paving paint (to tie in the colours). This was probably the longest part of the project, and we are kinda glad we decided to just go with the one wall. We (my dad and I) were quite excited by the results - how could people be throwing this gold away by the truck load???. All we needed to do was scratch away a little of the surface to reveal such an array of beautiful timber beneath. I have a bit of a supply left over so am quite keen to think of a few projects. I might add that most fence contractors would be more than willing to give it away if you come and pick it up (it will still be in fencing lengths, but such a great resource should not go to waste)
BTW, the last photo is my dad in his woodworking chopper position - it was LATE on our 3rd day
    Cheerio.

    Part 3

How much do I hate plastering gyprock!!!!
Putting it up was OK, but plastering, man in the future I will be forking out my hard earned for that little project. Seems reasonably straight forward until you need to get it right.
Had 2 goes at it cause I was unhappy the 1st time. It was better 2nd time around, but there will be lots of pictures hanging on the joins still though.
My little helper just loved the plaster. Her helping meant a lot of extra sanding on a pristine wall, but the fact is, she was entertained enough to let me spend about 11/2 hrs out there basically concentrating on plastering and not her, so I was quite happy with the trade off.
Have painted now and started moving stuff in, but it is still not finished due to other things getting in the way. Am half way through adding a picture rail, and have to trim cornice etc.
Hopefully I will be able to post the rest over the coming weeks, I am hopeful of getting back out there over the weekend, which should see the picture rail and computer being finally hooked up in there, then just trim and lime wash of ceiling – which means ripping everything out again.
Oh well, the price you pay for procrastination and a wife who has realistic expectations only to be let down over and over.
    Cheerio.

A great idea for what should be a very useful room. Love the corrugated iron/wood panelling mix. Like the family story-telling too: great stuff!
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Thanks all for your responses. I am hoping it becomes more of a useful space once it looks like a room that can be used and not a half finished garage

There will be more to tell soon.......
