Slow progress on this I'm afraid, but I've done a bit more. The two components shown are the top side rails. They will connect the front and back legs at the top, and the side slats will fit up into the mortises and extend down to make the sides of the cabinet.

Not sure if this method was the best, the quickest, or the easiest, but I enjoyed doing it and the result is OK. I used floorboards for these parts so I had to laminate two pieces together to get enough thickness. This led to the method of routing half the mortise in each piece and then gluing them together.

Just making the jig was enough of a challenge. Plenty of test cuts involved to get the depth and width just right, as the slats were already made to final thickness.

The bottom fence is made of jarrah and has a notch which shows where the router will cut between the two side fences. Then I just have to line up my markings with the notch in the jarrah fence. An off-cut from the slats is used to keep the pieces aligned as I slide them through the jig for the next cut.

One photo has a couple of off-cuts in the mortises to show the fit. Any comments or opinions are very welcome.

Haha, yeah Christos, I was actually starting to forget where I was heading, too at one stage.

But I really am making something, and I made some good progress today. I'm starting to work on putting all the bits and pieces together. I'll put some pics up tomorrow and hopefully it will all start to make some sense

I get that when friends come over and ask what I am doing. I tell them and they are not able to picture it. Then they ask where is the drawing. I respond by telling them that it is in the house.

After 20 minutes of continual explanation I finally go and get the drawing that I did on some scrap piece of paper.

Then they ask were are the dimensions, I bring out the longest piece and tell them to add another millimeters to each end of this. Bring out the tape measure and measure it for them. Then I tell them sorry that the wrong piece I think it was that one there. I get some strange reactions after that.

Well Christos, it's really quite obvious.

Let's say the legs are A, the lower frame is B the upper frame is C the back panel is D the side slats are E and the top is F.

The bits with the holes in are part of C, which the E's go into. The four A's go around the B and the D goes between the two A's, the F goes on top and Robert's your mother's brother.

    Hi Christos,

I'm still mucking around with the assembly of the various bits. It's a bit trickier than I thought but hopefully I'll get a good day or two in the shed this weekend and get it together with some photos.

This "making it up as you go" caper can be frustrating at times.

I've finally stuck some bits together. It's not all glued up yet but at least you can see what I'm doing. The sides will have slats right across later but for now I've just placed a few in one side to show where they'll go.

A shelf will be installed on top of the drawer divider. Two drawers to go below the shelf and then two doors for the main cupboard area. I'm still not sure if the design is OK but it seems to be coming together.

The legs are only 20 x 20mm and are a little wobbly at the moment but I am hoping this will be reduced when all the slats are fixed in place and everything is glued up. If not I can put some horizontal pieces between the legs although I'd prefer not to if possible.

Please feel free to comment, advise, criticise, encourage or otherwise say what you think.

    Thanks Gro.

No worries Christos, I'm sure no one could. I probably should have started with a photo of a drawing but I didn't expect to take so long to get this far.

I hope you know my ABC explaination was meant to be a joke

Just a quesion - where did you get your jarrah floor boards from? Is there a local supplier near you that sell old boards?

    Cheers,

    Andy

Gro, I was working at a house a few years ago and the customer had new jarrah flooring installed. ( Looked absolutely stunning) It was a fairly large house and a good stack of floorboards were left over, just sitting in the middle of one of the rooms.

I mentioned to the owner not to chuck them out as I would be happy to have them, but they wanted to keep them. Anyway about a month later they rang me out of the blue and said the floor polisher was coming the next day and if I came and took the floorboards straight away I could have them.

    I reacted very unslothfully.

Being leftovers and rejects, many boards were bent and bowed but over the years I've had some good value from that score.
