Thread: WIP Hall Table

I have had a bit of time down in the shed over the past week in-between helping our local CFA put out fires started by idiots, what is it, when it reaches 38 c and the North winds starts to blow, triggers a stupid switch in some peoples mind, and they have to start mowing lawns

I glued the table top up, but since I had to dress the old baltic I was not really happy with the way it came out, so i decided that would insert a couple of thin strips into the table top.
I cut two slow curves along the entire length of the top using a jigsaw. This worked good and a few minutes sanding it was ready to try and see if the inserts could be successfully inserted?
The two inserts are made from Balckwood and Jarrah off-cuts I had, they are about 10 mm thick.
the glue up was tricky, had to be careful not break the inserts, a slow clamp-up.

Today I hope to start the legs, I have not decided how i will shape the legs, open to any ideas, I thought I might try and curve them?? As mentioned above they will be made from laminated baltic pine,

What sort of curves are you thinking for the legs?

I think I have decided to slow curve them, the legs are 58mm square, so at the bottom, I will start at around 30 mm, they are 845 long so will end up long and skinny, bit hard to understand with out a sketch or drawing so will post a photo as soon as I have some done them,

Had a far old crack down in the workshop last couple of days, dressed all the timber for the legs, managed to get them glued on Friday night, ready for shaping.
The legs are made from baltic pine and old oregon pine, all are about 19mm thick. I planed the legs down to around 56 mm square, decided to curve the legs, I think they have come out well, the legs are 845mm log.

Another few hours back in the workshop, finished all the legs and sanded them, set up the old router table with a few stops for the mortise on the top of the legs,

looking great - like the top and the contrasted timber in the legs.

Over the past couple of weeks in between work I have managed to spend a bit of time down in the workshop. The hall table is nearing completion now and I have really enjoyed the project,
I think If I was doing it again, I would not have laminated the oregon in between the baltic pine for the legs? I think it looks a little bit of a miss match???
As you can see by the photos, the first couple are the glue up of the frame, the weights are used to remove any possible twisting due to the styles being a little bit twisted, It did work with only a slight twist.
I set the table saw blade on a 20 degree angle and made 20mm bevel on the top edge of the table.
To attach the table to the frame i used a domino joiner and cut up some old stainless steel angle iron for the "hold down clamps", seemed to work ok, I suppose you can buy these?? not sure, never really looked for them,
They worked, and the slots are larger than the little clamps so should allow any movement.
