    Hi Gumby,

Hinges aren't that tricky if you accurately locate and mark well and double check before cutting and similarly before drilling the screw holes .

One tip though about the hinges into the narrow timber is when checking out the perimeter timber wedges for the hinge rebate with the chisel to be careful not to try and take too deep a cut along the length of the hinge - where the thin section remains - see sketch. I found if the chisel is trying to remove too much wood then it can easily split the timber and blow-out the thin piece of wood  . I recommend you cut the depth required in two goes so you don't try to cut out too big a wedge.

Nice timber colours used Gumby - she will love it I'm sure.

    Cheers

\Many thanks for that diagram TJ. If I never post in this thread again, you'll know I stuffed it up. (not planning on doing any more until Sunday)

    Very Nice Bendy man.

I'm with ya on the hinge bit, hate the brasstards.

That's what I like about Rogers plans, the lack of hinges!

    Can I suggest these hinges:

I get them from Timbecon http://www.timbecon.com.au/products/hinges-432_0.aspx

Used them in a box I finished on the weekend. much easier to install and less obtrusive IMHO.

    Cheers.

    Hey Gumby,

How about some brass pis that go into the ends of the lid through the ends of the box.

They can then act as hinges.

Never tried it but sounds simple and unobtrusive.

I do have some thin brass rod which could be used that way. I'll have to give it some thought. I like those barrell hinges but the timber is pretty thin on the sides so they'd need to be very small. I have seen them done like that but it's a bit like dowelling, you have to make sure the hole is exact or it won't fit. I'm not sure that is the best for my limited ability.

    Gumby,

How about if you clamp the two pieces together and then drill them on a drill press and insert the brass pin?

Sounds easy but haven't tried it.

They are also available in 8mm.
Gumby, the only way to increase your ability is have a go. Do a heap of practise on some scrap, and if you have a drill press just set up some stops so you drill in the same position for the carcase and the lid. Don't write off your ability too lightly mate, or in other words "av a go ya mug"

BTW this type of hinge usually goes in the back edge not the sides.

Yeah thanks mate, i know how they go in. The back and sides are just a shade under 10mm thick so 8mm hinges doesn't leave enough to spare.

I'm off to Don's (DPB) tomorrow and will take it over there.

As for practice, please read the bottom of all my posts

    Thumbs up

The smallest of the barrel hinges are 5mm dia. The box I installed them in has 8mm thick timber (see pics below).

Although slightly ascew, I like them and they work realy well. The chamfers on the back and lid allow it to open and acts a rest when open.

    Give it a go Gumby.

I also like the brass rod idea. Havent made a box with that sort of lid yet though.

    Hinges.....................hummmmmmmmmm

I used to hate fitting hinges but, not any more!!

    I read a FWW article about fitting hinges years ago. It stated for butt style hinges;
    1. hinge rebate DEPTH (front to back NOT up/down measure) = just UNDER hinge pivot point measurement when closed.
    2. hinge rebate hight = ½ thickness of hinge @ knuckle
    3. hinge width is marked with a marking knife
Use a metric caliper to make things accurate. I use a dial version because I'm ½ blind. I used to stress about hinges but now I don't worry
    Cheers
