Just a couple of shots of the frame in progress. The legs are 770 mm high and measure 44 mm x 35 mm at the top and 40 mm x 28 mm at the bottom. All joints connecting rails and legs are domino. The side rails are 40 x 35 mm and the front and back are 50 x 16 mm. I am unsure as to whether I will add a curve to the front rail. The stand also requires rebated "skis" at the top and bottom. Tomorrow I will route the dados required to hold them.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Default The Stand (cont...)

The next step in the process was to make the rebates in the bottom of the legs to hold the feet.
I used the Domino to do this, using a 10m mm cutter and making two passes, one below the other to finish with a 20 mm wide x 25 mm deep trench.
The feet were then thicknessed to exact size and chamfered using a SCMS. All parts were oiled and sanded prior to glue up. I find this an easier way to get a good finish.

Fig #1 The domino in place for routing the trench. (note that I have a hairy ape to do this for me.)
Fig #2 The two chamfered feet on my artistic work bench
Fig #3 The two side frames assembled.
Fig #4 The trench for the foot.

Wendy, since I have routed a crown on the top of the cabinet, placing wooden peg hinges becomes problematical. It is probably still doable, but drilling from inside the cabinet to create a hidden hinge. Since there only needs to be a small amount of dowel actually inside the door, it may be possible to ease the door into place and use a through hole on the bottom of the cabinet for the bottom hinge. Hope that makes sense.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Almost there.
Now have to create drawers and shelves, mount the doors and wax and polish.

Here's some shots of the completed cabinet (just needs the hinges fitted, I left them in the car and they went to work with SWMBO). I intend to make a small removable box to be placed on the RHS, but it is not a high priority. So, I guess I'm finished.

    Rob

    Looks good Rob.

Didnt take you long. At my present rate of shed time, a job like that would take me 2 years at least.

Thanks for taking the trouble (and time) to do the WIP
    Good stuff.

Well done Rob, it looks good. Enjoyed the WIP reports,

Great looking cabinet. Even Krenov would like that one. I like the internal divisions. Have you made the small box yet. Well done

    looks good.

How did you address seasonal variation in the back and top? It looks all solid in the story, but I'd be concerned about expansion.

I'd like to thank everyone for the kind comments.
I hope the WIP format was helpful, but I'm glad to answer any questions either here or in a PM/email.
I'm actually going to redo the doors using Blue Gum. I've also got the box to do. I'll post pics "as they come to hand".

Boz, the back panels are 10 mm wide and sit unglued in a 10 mm wide and 12 mm deep dado at the sides. So there is expansion room there. The top is one piece of timber, dominoed into the sides. The mortise for each domino in the sides is wider than the tenon, so if there is some serious swelling, I think it'll cope.

    Regards,

    Rob

Just for the sake of completion. The handles are Macassar Ebony.

Really nice job. I like the bluegum doors even better. Then again, I do love bluegum. Well done.
